Grooming Your Yorkie Does anyone groom their own Yorkie? Is it easy? Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!! Are there classes you can take, etc.? |
YouTube has some great videos on how to groom a yorkie. IMHO it is pretty easy. Just remember, you have to lift the hair from the skin and brush out to make sure you get it all. |
I groom my boy. I watched a professional groomer once and watched a few videos then just took the leap. I find it pretty easy and terribly affordable! :D |
Many members here groom at home for various reasons. It's not hard but it's not super easy. I think a lot has to do with how well your pup behaves during the process. Also, don't expect your furbie to look perfect on your first cut. Practice makes perfect! I watched clips on youtube and when I'm at stores like Petsmart, I'd watch the groomers cut. I think watching it in real person helped a lot. Good luck! |
Definitely google/youtube videos about this! They have yorkie specific videos for every stage of grooming that you'd ever dream of! Even just for the usual, in between, maintenance it's a lifesaver! They'll also show you what tools you'll need and how to use them. The biggest key to grooming them is being confident about it. They will sense your unease and it'll make them nervous as well. Even if you have no idea what you're doing, just do it confidently :D LOL |
Clippers? What kind of clippers should I get? I don't have a clue. I saw a basic set made by Wahl that was about $25. |
I think it depends on a few things. Basic grooming (trimming tips of ears, paws etc) is easy, just takes a little practice. Grooming a silk coat is easy, easy to keep long. Cotton coats and puppy cuts are more challenging. I think anyone can learn. |

Start with learning how to properly trim the ears. Once you have mastered that do paws. Don't try to do too much the first time, give yourself and your yorkie a break. Good luck! |
Grooming tools I bought a deluxe Wahl clipper set that has several of items in it including a training DVD. I also bought a cordless trimmer for the small stuff. I've watched one YouTube video but am going to watch a few more before trying it. Thanks for all the help! |

I haven't made any mistakes after that one but I make it a habit to keep the basic first aid things close by when I groom. :) |
Thanks Thanks for the reminder! |
