swimming? My fur baby is right at 10 weeks old. We live right on the lake of the Ozarks. We have a fenced in yard for Luna but every night we go down on the dock to feed the fish in the lake. Of course we let little miss walk down with us. She goes everywhere we go. Anyhow....she has recently discovered She is a huge fan of swimming!!! The first time she got in the water it scared the crap out of me. I was right there with her and she was just checking things out.....Then, plop!! In she jumped! I grabbed her, wrapped her in a towel and assumed she had enough of that nonsense. Wrong!! She wants in the water any chance I will let her in it. Wich is not very often. Am I being an over protective mommy? I see lots of people on here letting their fur babies swim. I would not be so concerned if she were older but she is still a baby! Also, do any of you use life jackets for your dogs? I'm going to buy one for when we take the boat out but maybe I should use it more than just on the boat? Any opinions? |
My two swim from april until november. We tried my daughters rehome 8 year old larger yorkie- she sunk like a weight. I think it is because Abby and Ziva have been swimming since their first spring- 7 and 9 months old. They ride the boogie boards but don't jump in until I tell them to! |
Aww I think that's great she likes to swim!! I definitely would get a lifejacket for her tho- you just never know when that could come in handy, especially if you like to go boating, or in case you take your eyes off her when you're swimming. It's good peace of mind. Finally got Billi to swim at a friends pool and she still hates it... Maybe eventually she'll love it. I just think it's so cute when little dogs enjoy swimming! |
I replied to your other thread but Jackson loves to swim and has since he was young! He spends the whole summer swimming off and on. It's such a great form of exercise. We use the life jacket on boats etc but I don't bother anymore with it while he's just in the pool. He's a strong swimmer and I'm always with him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMV2...nJy0e5dC5PD9qA |
Yes. I have no idea how I managed to post this twice! Oops. Thanks for the comments, I feel better and guess I will continue to let her be my little river rat :) I will for sure be buying a life jacket for her! The weather is cooling off so I was goin to wait till next spring so I know how big she is going to end up being just so I would not have to buy another one if she gets bigger than I expect her to be. But, I'm not going to wait now. I have to admit Its pretty cute watching a 2lb puppy swimming like a fish. :) also, of course I never leave her alone or let her get to far away. I keep a very lose eye on her at all times. She Is my baby!! |
I just found out Dutch likes to swim too. I took her on a nature walk. We walked around the pond and as I was standing there contemplating the facts of life while admiring the beautiful scenery, I hear this splash. Dutch must of gotten bored and took it upon herself to entertain herself. Fortunately she had her leash on but she took to the water like a fish. I didn't really think she like water as she is not to thrilled about getting a bath. Now that I know she likes the water, next summer we will do some more water activities. |
Gee, I love hearing all of your experiences with your doggies swimming! We only live 2 miles from the beach. I'll have to take Giggy and see if he likes to swim. |

Gunner hates water, and is even afraid of the noise the waves make when hitting the shore. |
