Perfect little Piper 1 Attachment(s) I've had my 4yr old yorkie for a few months now and love her more with each passing day. I don't know anything about her life before coming to me; she's very smart with things she likes, not so much w/housebreaking, although she's doing ever so much better. Piper seems very sensitive and responds with lowered head when I've asked her to do something simple such as to sit, so I haven't pushed her--I love her as she is...But knowing how very intelligent she is and how quick to learn (again, with things that appeal to her), I'm wondering if maybe she's sorta playing me with the aversion (hurt) to basic training. Although I raised German Shepherds (obedience trained, et al), Piper is my first yorkie (little dog) and she'd give my shepherds a run for their money as to ability to learn. Again, I think my little girl is perfection as is, but am I missing something or misreading her? Or perhaps she's simply a better trainer than I...?! |
Hi and welcome to YT!! Bless you for giving Piper a loving home. If you've only had her a few months, she may still be adjusting to her new life. I'd keep trying to teach her things, and give her over the top encouragement when she does it. But take your cue's from her if you think she's getting stressed about it. The main thing is to build the bond and the rest will follow. My first Yorkie was 4 when I rescued her. It took nearly a year for her to completely adjust and start being herself. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Piper is just gorgeous! As to the training...it may be that she associates a stern training voice (not that you're being too stern or anything) w/ something negative - perhaps her previous owner used negative reinforcement to train her...? |
Maybe she's training you? LOL j/k Maybe she's sensitive? My Zoey, she's smart but stubborn, sensitive, and spoiled rotten. If she does something she KNOWS is wrong, she'll still sulk as if we reprimanded her when we didn't. There were quite a few times where I had to coax her out from behind the couch... |
Piper's Welcome 1 Attachment(s) Thank you for your encouragement, compliments, and sincere support toward Piper and me. I am relieved to learn that Piper is a "true" yorkie in temperament, attitude, and playing yours truly like a violin (what the heck, I love music). I will continue to be patient and observant with my little girl and enjoy every minute--I love her beyond...Thanks again for your help and letting me know we're in good company and on the right track. Soooo glad I came upon Yorkie forum and all of you! |
