2nd puppy vaccination today...anything I need to do.. Trinkets breeder gave her the first vaccinations and she has an appt. today to get her 2nd vaccination. Should I give something like childrens benadryl before the vaccination or wait until after to make sure she isnt having reactions and then give it if needed? or is there something better to do or give? I always have them do the 5 way as I do not like the Lepto vac. |
No! Don't give her any unprescribed medication before her vaccination or for probably a day or two after. If she has a reaction, the vet can tell you what to look for and what to do, tho it's probably unlikely anything will happen. She'll probably be sleepy and want to rest for the rest of the day (that's what mine does anyway). If it upsets her tummy, gives her diarrhea, then feed her some plain canned pumpkin to clear her up. Other than that, just love on her and give her a comfy/quiet place to rest if she wants to. Good luck! :) |
Yes, you can always, always give Benadryl 30-45 mins before any vaccination. My vet says that in her 30 yrs as a vet, she has never seen a single vaccine reaction in a dog who was given Benadryl prior to a vaccine. It's a great idea to give prior to rabies if you're worried as well. |

If a dog is going to have an adverse reaction to a vaccine(s), it will be the 2nd, or 3rd, or annual Boooster & so on & it can get worse, not better. This is why vaccines & rabies shot should be spaced out (2 weeks apart). Given separately, you'll also know which shot caused the bad reaction. Turbo had an adverse reaction to his 3rd round of puppy shots. As soon as he was brought out to me, he was pawing his face & I told them, 'something's wrong' & they said he's fine. In the car, he was rubbing himself all over the car seat. I called the vet office from the parking lot & they told me to bring him in. By that time, he was starting to swell up & his eyes were starting to shut & his tongue was swollen, hanging out of his mouth! They gave him benadryl shot, we waited half an hr & he was back to normal. They said it was a good thing that I recognized what was happening...(that story below*) For Turbo's annual booster, he got an anti-inflammatory shot (more expensive than benadryl shot, but in Turbo's case, since he was known to have an adverse reaction, the vet chose this protocol for him) b4 receiving the vaccines & waited half an hr @ the vet's. He needs this done for every vaccine given. I chose not to re-vaccinate him again since studies shows that they have full immunity after the annual booster. He only gets rabies, according to law (here in CA it's every 3 years, wish it was longer:() & always an anti-inflammatory shot b4hand. *Turbo has a sister that needs this done (not Princess), she got a mild allergic reaction to her 2nd round of puppy shots, so I knew what to look out for. I say mild bc that's what the ER vet said, but it didn't look mild to me. I didn't notice her swollen shut eyes, face & tongue hanging out til later that evening when it was time for her din din. She was sleeping all day after her shots, I thought she couldn't breath bc she was barely moving! All she needed was a simple benadryl shot. I wonder if it runs in the family? This site lists how much benadryl you can give, I wouldn't give aspirin unless approved by vet: Pet Vaccination After Care Instructions for Dogs and Cats: Luv My Pet - Petco |

New to the site and came across this post first thing. Strange because I took my baby in today for her 2nd round of shots today and she in fact did have an allergic reaction to them. Called the vet and he told me to give her benadryl. Next time I will know to do it before hand. |
No kidding, I was always told not to give anything. The things you learn on YT! |
She is still not feeling the best. Her ears are droopy and she is cuddled up sleeping and has been most all day. Poor little girl has had one tough day. I feel bad because I also got her micro-chipped and I know that had to hurt. If I would have known she was going to react to the shot I would have held off on poking her with the micro-chip needle. :( |
Poor baby, hope she feels better soon! |
She was fine with her 2nd. I had my childrens liquid benadryl on hand just in case but she was fine thank goodness. I have a Chihuahua that had a reaction to her rabies vaccination and I waited until she reached 2 lbs which was 11 months old before giving it. I always wait well over 2 weeks for Rabies after final series of puppy vaccines. I usually try to wait as long as I can so sometimes it is a few months or in my tiny chihuahuas case 6 months. I never get the yearly boosters and I do not do any more vaccines after their initial puppy vaccines. I do titer every 3 yrs but always comes back good so I am thinking about stopping that to, but will wait until she is 3 yrs old and titer her again just to be on the safe side ;-) |
