Selective memory Can somebody please explain to me why Dutch can remember where every dog lives in our neighbhorhood (she stops in front of their house hoping she sees them so can start barking at them).....but she can't remember where her potty pad is? She can remember the bush where she chased the bird (she stops at the same bush hoping to see the bird)....but she can't remember where her potty pad is. She can remember the exact tree she chased a squirrel up (she stops at the tree hoping to see the squirrel)......but she can't remember where her potty pad is. She can remember in which drawer her treats are in (she stands by the cabinet when she wants a treat).....but she can't remember where her potty pad is. There has got to be a scientific explanation....:p. |

lol! I think your title sums up the issue - selective memory. Yorkies are stubborn. That's what makes them so cute yet frustrating! |

True yorkies are stubborn, and one needs a lot of patience with them, look at all the excitement you will have when Dutch finally remembers where the potty pad is. Ya gotta love them yorkies |
LOL I can't help but laugh, well written! LOL On our walks on local trails, mine will take a sharp left or right, zing, right off of the trail into a dead end whether it be a steep ravine or impenetrable brush.... I originally stacked it up to senility setting in but on following trips, while passing the same location, he would make the exact same 90 degree turn left or right to the same barricade. I just can't figure out "What is he thinking?" LOL |
This definitely a battle of wills.:D But I am going to win this battle. I take her to the potty pad 10 times a day and tell her to go potty. She just looks at me and lays down on them. :( |
Dex just drags them around or chews on them. Then pees close to it. For the most part though, he's going outside. I'd just like to get it through his adorable little head that I'd like him to use the pad in case of emergency! I'm worried about the winter time and whether he'll even 'go' outside when the temps get to the -20c mark. |

Your original post me me laugh a LOT. There's a house up the street with a wooden play structure, and a big old grey squirrel was sitting on it when we went past. Once. Dex goes INSANE every time we walk past now. It was ONE. TIME. The squirrel is GONE now little buddy, can we PLEASE keep going? Nope... he's determined if only he can get up that slide, he will catch that squirrel! |

Such a true story for all the yorkies that I have owned...LOL:) |
Yup, that's a Yorkie. It's all about "what's in it for me?" Treats have helped with our potty issue, now we are working on barking. Ali can be barking in the next room and if I say "STOP" she comes running for her treat. She owns me. |

I think selective deafness also needs to added, to all kids, fur or no. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
Memory Isn't that the truth. LOL! |
Lol cute yep they are stubborn. I had boo three weeks and he would not go outside. Three hours one day and he went when he got back in the house in his diaper. So one day i took him for a walk. I have back problems so walks are rough. But we go about a block and he went. So now i will be asleep and he jumps on my side and crawls to my ear and licks me till i get up. Tonday was the first time in a month he went out side to wet all day. With a walk of coarse. Pood once outside and once inside. Not sure what i will do when i have my neck surgery 12 weeks recovery. Hoped he would just go outside without the walk. We will see. |

perhaps she does not want to potty inside on a pad, I had the same battle with Lola for a month, boy was she stubborn about not using it. Then if she went on the pad or near it she walked all through it. then someone suggested I start taking her outside, and she took to it in a few days. She is 100% housebroken and my house does not smell like it did with my last dog. She can easily hold herself for 8 hours if needed and rings a jingle bell if she wants to be let out. We live in MI and get lots of snow and it is very cold, so in the winter, we clean a small area outside our front door, when it's time for her to go I open the door hold a long lead she runs outside and in one min or less she does her business and comes right back in. I know this does not work for everyone but after having a pup that used a potty pad vs one that goes outside, I would choose outside over pee pads any day. |
not sure if this is true but a retired vet that lives on my street says it's just not natural to a dog to go inside on a paper so some do not all take to it at all. I also know that after having 5 yorkies the ones that went outside vs inside had far fewer accidents than those that used a paper. My last guy had access to his pad 24/7 yet he would still occasionally go on throw rugs. This made it hard to bring him to friends and families homes, most did not want pee pads in their living room, plus even if I brought the pad I could not trust him. |
