New with special needs
 

I have a very special 7yr old yorkie I adopted in May.He came from a puppy mill and had so much tooth decay the vet removed what was left of his teeth and his lower jaw.As soon as I adopted him from the rescue I was told he had a very mild cough and was on theophylline.At vets office after X-rays and blood work I was told he has pulmonary edema,collapsing trachea and an enlarged heart.Finn is currently taking Salix,heart med,and a cough suppressant.(all liquids)Any helpful ideas on feeding are appreciated.He has been on meds for two months now and feeling better but two days ago started getting a rash on back.Only new thing started was Advantix last week because I saw a flea.Vet thinks ringworm and started on anti fungal.Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have any advice but just wanted to say what a great person you are to take this very special pup into your home and heart. Thank you for doing so.

Hi and welcome to YT. Thank you so much for adopting Finn. I have no advice but I wanted to thank you for giving Finn a loving home. Hopefully others will be able to help you with advice. I would also recommend that you post in the sick and injured section.

I am a huge fan of Royal Canin...they have a Senior +8 Kibble and also a canned food for seniors. You can get it from Chewy.com ....I attach what they say about the formula....

I dont know if your pup can eat kibble with the jaw partially removed, but the canned is easily eaten and digested and tolerated by seniors. You can mix some of the canned with the senior kibble, to soften the kibble....you can soften it with a little warm water....or just the canned alone. I do not know too many people that have dogs that do not like Royal Canin.
I do want to thank you for providing this precious pup a loving and safe final chapter to a horrendous life....you will be richly rewarded in this life and afterwards....this is one of God's creatures that He has entrusted humans with his care.....and the life he has had up until now, is not in His favor. Thank you for giving him the care. love, and comfort he deserves.

Finn is Special
 

Thanks for the support.I wouldn't trade him for anything.He has been a huge blessing to our family.We recently lost our 14yr old greyhound Minor.I ordered the Royal Canine this morning.Are rashes common in Yorkies?I am an RN so have seen lots of rashes on humans but this is the first one on Finn.

I have no advice to offer but just wanted to say how wonderful it is that you have given Finn the loving home he deserves. I truly believe these rescue babies end up giving us so much more than we give them. They are so grateful, and add so much love to our lives. They are SO worth the $$ and effort we spend on them. I'm praying that God blesses you with many happy years together!
