I have a bully in the family Molly is a bully I have had a shift in the dynamics of my little pack.Macy is 5 and has always been the leader.Molly is 2 and has always been the follower.Recently Molly has been bullying Macy.If Macy is laying in a bed, Molly will stand at the bed and bark until Macy gets up and moves to another spot.Molly will immediately lay down in the bed and act like she is so proud of herself.I still feed Macy first and greet Macy first and act like she is the dominate one but I have noticed Macy and Molly seem to be fighting over things they never did before like toys and my attention. My question is..does it sound like Molly is becoming the dominate one and Macy is going along with that?Do I let it happen or correct Molly? |
You could try interrupting the behavior a bit, ie the barking, but they'll still work some things out on their own. What I find w/ my 3 is Pfeiffer is not dominant at all, whereas Wylie and Marcel have worked out being dominant in different areas. Wylie was most dominant at one point, but then little Marcel started to take over some areas...which I guess was just natural. They seem to work things out on their own pretty well. |
I wasn't sure if I need to correct Molly's behavior or let them work it out. They have kind of worked out an arrangement between themselves and I am watching it evolve. Molly gets the choice of beds and Macy gets to sit on my lap with Molly watching from the bed. I am just going to let them work it out and see where this goes. I think Molly is going through the Terrible Two's right now. She seems so bratty!!! |
This is very interesting to me because I have noticed the dynamics between Max and Teddy changing. Max is almost 6 and Teddy is 5. Max was always top dog, although very tolerant Teddy. Lately, it is clear that Teddy considers himself Max's equal. Like Ann, I let them work things out between themselves, but I give Max a little extra attention to remind him he is my special guy. |
Molly is being extra bratty today. Whatever bed Macy is in Molly will bark at her to move. Macy will move and Molly gets in the bed. It seems like the beds are the area they have shifted dominance. It's not like we only have one bed......we have 2 beds in almost every room of the house. I have a kitty bed in the kitchen that Macy loves to lay in. It's the bed that looks like a den. I was looking for Molly this morning and here she was stuffed into that bed now. She is 2 lbs. bigger than Macy and has to squish herself into the kitty den but there she was with her head sticking out of the bed because she was too big for the bed and Macy was laying on a kitchen rug a foot away. |
I wonder if this is just a natural progression. If Macy isn't protesting the change, then perhaps she is ready to retire from her place as "head of the pack" and let Molly take over. If the quarrels aren't too serious, I'll kinda step back and let things take their course as long as they can settle things without things getting out of hand. |
