Question about weight of your baby.. Daisy Mae had another round of puppt vaccines today and the vet told me that her weight was 2.8 lbs. After seeing a buncg of posts of full grown Yorkies that are only 2.5 lbs does this mean that my baby is going to be a FATTY!... :) She is only 10 weeks now.. |
Charts are used as a guesstimate...same thing with the 8 week triple the weight and 12 weeks you double it. It's all just a tool and not written in stone. Gracie was 2.3 lbs at 8 weeks...this would have meant that she would be 6.9 lbs full grown and she's only 5 1/2. Rebel was 2 lbs at 6 1/2 weeks. He's 9 months now and hasn't gained an ounce in the past 3 months...he's 4 3/4 lbs. |
With the weight you are saying it sounds like she will be a healthy little girl. You do not want you puppy to be 2.5 lbs full grown. That is not a healthy weight. Yorkies should weigh between 5 and 7 lbs. if im correct |
Thanks Kimberley, That makes me fell better. Not that I wouldn't love her as a chunk, but I love the petitness (if that's a word) of Yorkies... |
Magic was 1.7lbs at 8 weeks and is now 5lbs and Sailor was 1.8lbs at 8 weeks and is now 7lbs. I don't think you can ever truly guess who big they will be...but I don't think your precious little girl will ever be a fatty!!! |
The frame of your doggie tells a lot...With a bigger frame, a higher weight is normal...Don't go just by weight, go by frame and bone structure :) Miko was 1lb 10 oz at 3-4 months (of course he was sick) but now he's 9 lbs and not overweight at all! |
I think that even if a yorkie is 7-8-9-or even 10 lbs they still look like small dogs compared to other breeds its just that now days people think that yorkies are supposed to be 2lbs!!!! Your yorkie is not a fatty by all means. My little daisy is 15 or 16 weeks old and weighs 2lbs 14 oz. Her tummy is a little round but she is not huge or anything she is still tiny!!! I cant imagine a dog being any smaller when full grown. |
I dont think she will be a fatty:) Jess weighed 2lbs at 8 weeks old and at almost 2 years old she is a little over 7lbs:) Also, they have what you call puppy fat at that age,its that stage where they look like little bears instead of yorkies but that all goes away and their weight evens out. |
2.5 lbs when fully grown is not "the norm" for a yorkie. the standard recognized by akc is anything under 7lbs, but i've seen yorkies as little as 2.5 lbs full grown to 12 lbs full grown and they are every bit as cute at 12 lbs as they are at 2.5 lbs. and very healthy, happy, and ACTIVE, "fatty" would definitely not a word to describe them. bunjee weighed 2.8 lbs at 8 weeks. he's now 4.5 lbs at 16 weeks. he'll be one of the "bigger" yorkies on the block, but still totally huggable, cuddlely and CUTE!!! |
Even by weight I think you need to take their frame into consideration. Yorkies are tiny dogs even at 10 lbs. Even though Mac is almost 1 1/2 lbs less than Mellie who is 4 1/2 lbs. Mellie is much skinnier than Mac. Mac is very compact while Mellie is very long. |
Took my pup to the vet yesterday for his shots. He's 17 weeks old and weighs 5 lbs 4 oz. The vet said his weight is wonderful and went into a list of problems that the little small Yorkie have. He is 100% against people wanting and breeding Yorkies hoping they will be less than 5 pounds full grown. He said, "It is criminal!!!" I know we have a lot of people who have little 3 1/2 or 4 pound Yorkies that are healthy ---but, unfortunately, this is often not the case. Even though many puppies survive without a mirad of health problems ---the odds are just not in their favor. I am so afraid that we will never be able to stop this trend...... Carol Jean |

It is the size Yorkies were meant to be. Under 7lbs. Having a 3-4 lb. dog is great for some people. And they are "within" the standard. |
