My Chewy thinks my house is a pooping playground! Hey everyone! It's been a week since I got my dog chewy and I can't seem to get him to poop on the wee wee pad. He pees there and then decided to either lay there or chew up the pad. I need help/ suggestions of what I can do for him to stop laying/chewing the pad. Also, it would be a great help if more of the experienced Yorkie owners can tell me how to make Chewy poop on the pads as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated by me and my house! I thank you all in advance! |

Start over. He has way too much freedom if he is pooping all over your house. He needs to be in an expen or confined to a small area where you can watch him while he is learning. If you see him searching for a good spot let him know he is in the wrong place (I say uh uh) and tell him to do good potty or whatever your word is. When he gets it right give him a treat (piece of kibble) My pup is 9 months old and finally has a schedule and more freedom. She will NOT poop on a pad she just peed on so I have to have 2 options for her. It's crazy but she will just not do it unless we are gone and she is stuck in her expen. Oh well, a Yorkie is a Yorkie. :rolleyes: |
Sorry no help here. Sammie has been with me for 1 month. If I block him in the kitchen he goes poop on the pad. But when I get up and let him have the run of the house when I am home he will not go to the pad in the kitchen. He will go in my dining room and poop right on my oriental rug!! The little stinker. I have caught him many times and yell no to him but he keeps doing it. I even have the back door open so he can run outside to poop but no he goes on the rug!! |
Yup, the whole rug thing is pretty confusing for them. A giant rug in a private setting is much better :eek: I would suggest giving him a little free space at a time with gates or whatever to protect areas you don't want him to go. Don't give him freedom until you see him go back to his approved potty area on a regular basis. |
The thing is, we aren't home about 9 hours of the day because of work/school... so I feel bad about giving him such little space for such a long period of time. Or do you guys think that this needs to be done in order to train him better? Thank you for all of your replies! |
It took mine a year before I would trust them in the house and still have a few rooms blocked off permanently with gates. I would try confining in a small area for a while. Also when he poopies wipe a small amount on the pad and leave the pad alone for a day to let him smell it. Maybe that will trigger him to try the pad. These are strange little beings and what works for one may not work for another. Some have also had luck with tethering with a leash to your waist but it didn't work for me. Have patience and be consistent. |
Make sure you keeping him confined to a pretty small area. You might want to also buy a potty pad holder. Also put some of his poo on the pad so he can see that were it is supposed to go. |
Dutch is back in training camp. She was doing fine on pads and then all of sudden she started peeing and pooping on this one carpet. So now she is back to being tether and she is back to sleeping in her expen at night. So she is just so strong willed. I place her on the potty pad and say potty and she just will not potty on her pads. This is going to be a long battle. |
