Yorkie/Chi eating dirt My Yorkie/chi is eating dirt..I was always told this is a sign of lack of iron..What do I do to get him more iron? Can I buy iron drops at the pharmacy like for babies or do I have to go to the Vet and have him charge me an arm and a leg...LOL Thanks |
One of my dogs used to dig for/eat worms. Maybe that's what your dog is doing. I wouldn't supplement with iron, it's one of the vitamins you can OD on and can be very dangerous. That's why they don't put it in gummy vitamins and most multivitamins. What are you feeding your dog? |
He eats dog food left throughout the day but he only eats a bit..He is a very slim dog..he also gets treats like Milkbones, pig ears etc...We also feed them a small bowl of food..usually meat we have BBQ'd like beef, pork or chicken at dinner time. I would never give him anything from the pharmacy but sure don't like it when the vet charges you a fortune for a small bottle of drops etc... |
His diet doesn't sound very balanced. Dogs have specific nutritional needs, dog food provides this. It sounds like most of his diet is treats and people food. If you want to homecook look into balanceit. Do you give him onions or garlic? They can cause anemia. Your dog shouldn't be given an iron supplement without bloodwork being done first (cbc and ferritin). |
He doesn't eat onions or Garlic...He is a very light eater..He will go all day without eating..He is thin but not so skinny you feel his ribs..He has been like this since we got him at 4 months...he will walk away from food most of the time..he is not a glutten. He has been to the vet in the last 2 months and bloodwork was done for a suspected allergy and the Dr..said his blood work was fine..Maybe hubby is mistaking digging a hole for eating dirt...Both dogs have dug little holes in the grass and just stick their noses in there...I take him next week for his shots so I guess I will ask him then. |

I asked about the onions and garlic because a lot of spices and sauces contain them, and I don't know how you BBQ the food for him. I agree, it is more likely that he has dirt on his mouth from digging. |
