ATL Level elevated...so worried!!! HELP My yorkie has an elevated ALT level of 170 discovered by a routine blood test before neutering...he had an elevated level once before, was given supplement & antibiotic and it returned to normal. This time my vet is recommending we do an ultrasound (having it done Sept. 5) I am so concerned? Advice? Comfort or concerns? Thanks in advance for any help!!! |
It could be he's got some level of liver dysfunction but that's not always the worst thing in the world and can often be managed by a change in diet. Try not to worry, have the sonogram and see what it shows and go from there. Has he had a Bile Acids Test? Does your doggie have any problems with nausea, spitting up bile, being lethargic, refusing to eat or rubbing his head against the walls & furniture or anything like that at times? My little Tibbe was diagnosed with IBS a couple of years back & MVD last year and he's going fairly well on a special hepatic diet. His IBS seems to occasionally give him more problems than his liver problem. |
Thanks!! Thank you Jeanie!! There was a slight mention of a liver shunt...I have read a lot about these liver enzymes and diet. So, I am hopeful he may just need a supplement and dietary changes. I appreciate your comforting response! I'm glad your Tibbe is fairing well!!! |
Hi and welcome to YT just sending comfort and best wishes as I don't have any advice. |
This may very well be of no concern. I cannot count the number of times a pup of mine has had a slightly elevated enzyme that meant absolutely nothing...it is not a given that there is a liver problem. Not to minimize this OR to suggest nothing is wrong, but it really is not that high. What did your vet say about it?? I see that you said a slight mention of liver shunt was mentioned....was there something going on with your pup? Was this blood work done because of that...or was it routine? I personally would not worry about it a lot until I have spoken at length with my vet. Looking online can sometimes frighten people because mostly lay people are just speculating. That said, I am happy that you found YT as there is a lot of great yorkie information here and a great community. Welcome. :) |
