Heart worm.
 
A neighbor (in SoCal) has a young black Lab and they spend much of the year in Louisiana. The owner told me the dog was recently seriously ill from heart worm, but recovered after the drastic treatment. The dog was on regular preventive HW meds, but still got the HW in LA. The owner said that in LA, HW preventives were often ineffective as the worms had become immune to them!!!
That is scary news if it is true, as what can one do to stop HW infection? This poor dog could get it again!!! Has anyone in the Southern states heard of this?

My beats are that he missed a treatment and that's how the dog became infected.

Had not "heard" of it, but I just know from other areas of my life, that meds easily become less effective as the disease or virus or bacteria evolve and mutate to the point that frequently the meds dont work as well. This is why I personally rotate Revolution with Canimax, and I even will rotate Sentinal into the mix. Not ever had an issue with heartworms or any other parasites, but I still keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer!

I don't think he did omit the month, he is very conscientious. When I first heard of the dog getting HW, my first reaction was as was yours. But he was adamant that he dosed every month due to the high risk area he was in. He has a very valuable hunting dog and would not want to lose him. ( perhaps the hunting areas are more prone to HW vectors?) I hope that the resistance is limited to a small area or location and that it does not become rife. It would be interesting to hear if others in the LA area have heard of this, but hopefully this is an isolated case.

Yep, I actually have heard of that happening before in very Southern states. :( Don't know how often it happens.... but I HAVE heard of it happening.

I know dogs on Heartworm preventative is not always 100% effective even when given properly and according to directions and that dogs can still get heartworm while on the monthly dosage, which is why some preventatives or websites selling it have guarantees that cover part of the costs up to a certain limit as long as certain criteria have been met.
