Potty training for a 14 week old pup How do you train a puppy (Yorkie). I must be doing something wrong. I am trying to train to go outside. My pup will go in the house then when I see it, he runs and hides. Like he knows he shouldn't have done it but does anyway. I am taking him out (the same door) every 1-2 hours. |

At this age you need to make sure you are within reach of your pup at all times and eyes always on them. If not, you need to put them in a crate or x pen. When Lexi would have an accident in the house, I would be close enough to grab her mid pee or poop say "NO" and immediately take her outside, and say "go potty". Then go back inside and clean it up. I would also take her out right after eating or drinking and naps. f she started to walk away from me, usually it was either to eat/drink or potty. So when she started to walk away sniffing I would take her outside until she would go, and say "good potty" and give her a treat. Don't worry, he is still young, and he will get better! |
Thanks I'll continue to take him out frequently and yes I try to keep an eye in him constantly but he does roam! Thank you for responding. I was hoping I wasn't doing something wrong. He's a great at pup! I guess I just thought it would be a quicker process. I'll also check out the link. |

Thanks!!! |
Just be patient .... My guy is almost 11 months and he is way better now than when I got him at 15 weeks. It has taken consistency and positive reinforcement in the housebreaking to get where we are today. Hang in there it will get better |
i purchased the book noted above. thanks for that. I do have a question though. Is it ok to keep him out of his 'den" if I'm with him or do I need to leave him in there all the time? |
It's good to have him out of his crate as much as you can, but if you're not supervising, in the crate he should go. My dog trainer told me in general dogs should not trusted as truly housebroken until after 2 years of consistency. That 7 days book is phenomenal. We started crating 3 days ago and NO accidents in the house so far. WOO! |
