Hi, new member with a question!
 

Hi! My name is Kathi and my husband and I are 1st time owners of a precious little Yorkie named Abbie. To say we are TOTALLY in love with our little angel is an understatement! We live in AZ. and got Abbey about 2 mos. ago. She's the best little dog we've ever owned! Is she a dog? I'm not totally sure!!! LOL! She is soooooooooooo good already! Shoot, she was good from the day we brought her home! (Slept in her crate, on a chair right next to our bed, from the FIRST night!) She plays, she's silly, she loves us to distraction, she's almost housebroken and knows a few (very few) commands. OK! Enough about our Abs!!!
I've been on the forums searching for things for a while now, but haven't made the time to try and fill out my CP and post. Still don't know if I really have an avatar...but, I did upload a pic of Abbey in the gallery, at least...I THINK! LOL!
QUESTION: (I haven't been able to find this on the forums and apologize in advance if it's a topic that has been covered.) Abbey has already been to the groomers twice...the 1st time just for around eyes, nose, toenails, and private areas.... 2ND TIME: Here comes the problem. When I took our little Abbey in...her hair was so glossy, it shone, regardless of the light. I asked the groomer (who came with very high recommendations) to just trim her back ever so slightly to even it out... along with the regulars ...starting her topnot...(slow growing hair!;)) ...ANYWHOOOOO.... I noticed that her back wasn't the least bit shiny anymore, though she acted great...in other words, I knew she hadn't been mistreated)... it was way shorter than I wanted and on further inspection, I found that most of the hair on her back was FILLED WITH SPLIT ENDS! I've been trying to clip them off with scissors as much as I can. Has anyone experienced this? What could be the cause???? I would appreciate any help or advice! I WANT MY SHINY LITTLE COAT BACK AND THE SPLIT ENDS GONE!!!!

Hi and WELCOME to YT, fellow Arizonian :)! I'm not sure what would've happened to the coat, unless she brushed the dry coat too harshly, causing this breakage. I would probably just continue to let it grow out and trim the ends as it grows.

It is absolutely heartwarming to hear how much you love your little Abbie, and we all understand that here and feel the same about our pups:D

Yorkie's coat goes through many changes in the first year or two, so don't worry too much about what you are seeing. The shiny puppy black will be going away and the next layer will be much lighter and the texture will change too, sometimes a bit thinner then filling in again.

I don't think anything a groomer could do in one visit would result in split ends. The lovely "dry heat" you have in Arizona might contribute to her hair condition (I used to live there so know about that;)). What is your home grooming routine? What shampoo do you use, how often do you bathe her, do you use conditioner, what kind of brush and how often..... those things will make more of a difference in her coat appearance.

Can't wait to see more photos of her. The tiny one on your profile page is cute. This section of "how to guides" has help for posting photos in threads, and in albums.

Well, it was just that it didn't show up until immediately after the groomer clipped her, but you're probably right....the beautiful (ugh!) AZ sun! I probably "od" my poor little girl. I brush and comb her once, sometimes twice, daily bathe her once a week. Let me see, I'll have to check her little "beauty arsenal," as I've got so many things for a new mommie!!! LOL! "Ice on Ice," (taken from this site! :) )... "Yorkie Splash Shampoo and the YS conditioner," "Chris Christensen; Spectrum 10 Conditioner, Spectrum 10 Hypro Pac Intensive Treatment, Silk Spirits, Liquid Silk Protein," "GNC Pets Waterless Shampoo Plus Leave-In Conditioner,"; "Yorkie Sheen Detangler/Finishing Spray," and another small bottle of the same with a tropical scent.
For her utensils: the Madan Pin brush, the Madan metal comb, and also from Madan...a plastic comb with a metal end for parting the "saddle." I also use, and have found quite useful...a comb from my husbands goatee/thingy...that is plastic and has tiny teeth that seems to work great for her head and by her precious little nose!!!

I still wonder, though...as it didn't occur till after she had been clipped and if it was some sort of "clipper burn," as the whole area was covered with split ends!...but, maybe they, the split ends were ... ??? It just doesn't make sense. Could she have done it with the dryer?...a blade that was hot or dull? She DID say that she doesn't brush or comb them out wet and I always do????:confused:

Welcome to YorkieTalk. Maybe the not being shinny is because they used a different shampoo?

Hi! I wanted you guys to know that I did answer you and THANK You all for your responses, but for some reason it was never posted??? Sounds like you got the grooming stuff covered! Ha :) your gonna love it here this is yorkie heaven.....

If clipper blades are dull, it can cause split ends. Did you tell your groomer? She needs to have her blades sharpened.

Just FYI, CC Ice on Ice is a silicone product. It coats the hair & moisture can't get in = dull hair over time. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month or whenever you think it needs some good cleaning from build up by styling products.

Oh & another thing, there's a saying: never brush wet or dry hair.
A light spritzing of a good conditioning spray b4 brushing is best, to prevent hair breakage.
