Matting on back legs Let's get one thing straight... Bella hates being brushed, no matter how often or not I try to do it, she just hates it. I'm sometimes lucky and get her almost fully brushed, but I struggle with the back of her back legs, near the anal side. She just won't allow me to brush there at all. It is starting to mat and I seriously don't want to resolve to cutting her hair so soon as she's not even 4 months old yet. Please, any advise... (not cutting) Thanking you in advance... :) |
Have you tried a good conditioner when you bath? Combing while wet is the easiest time to remove mats. Work a little at a time with a comb not a brush! I use a comb that has rolling teeth. This helps prevent pulling. I am sure others will have more suggestions. It is normal for puppies to not want to be combed, but the mats need to be removed or she will get hot spots! |
Since you're already having issues with her and brushing I wouldn't work the matts out, you don't want to make your life even harder in the future. I'd cut the matts with thinning shears to break them down and make it easier to save some hair without hurting her. This also leaves less of a dead spot. For brushing I used to give Lola cookies that took her a little time to eat constantly while she learned brushing was ok, then I slowly cut it back. Now she just gets a small treat before and after. In the future, after she's ok with brushing, you can use coconut oil and a comb to work matts out. |
Thank you, I'll definitely try a better conditioner and maybe also the coconut oil. Never thought of the coconut oil, but will give it a go. |
Definitely use a comb in that area and just take very small sections at a time to work out the mats...and use a conditioner like others have suggested. |
