Nail Trimming Impossible Tried to do Sammies nails for the first time. Impossible. He freaked out so much. I don't even think the best groomer is going to be able to do it. Any suggestions. Thanks |
I'd probably ask the vet for a mild sedative to give him for the first few trims, wrap him tightly in towels to restrain him and keep him safe, including over his head, expose only one paw at a time and clip or grind and get it over as quickly as possible then lots of positive reinforcement and play time, tossing his ball, playing tugowar to get his mind off it. Many grown or older dogs who are scared fight attempts to do their nails at first but eventually as they come to trust their owner more and find out nothing awful happens to them during it, they begin to accept it. |
Some pups just can't stand it, not sure why. I just paid the vet or a groomer to do it. It took 3 people to handle one 5lb. Yorkie. |

I adopted Cody when he was 2 1/2 y/o from my vet. I don't know if his prev.owner had him groomed. When I got him the vet had him shaved with just face styled. I took him in June for his first puppy clip, this is a new groomer for me, my neighbor has 2 yorkies that are always so well groomed, reason I choose to use them. From what this groomer told me, he was fidgety for the grooming so his face was a bit uneven when it came time for nail trim he was not a good boy at all, she was able to cut his nails but didn't buff them because he was getting to stressed out. I believe in time if I continue with this same groomer, he will begin to trust her and will be more comfortable with her. I use to trim my girls nails until one day I made one nail bleed, that was the end of home nail clipping for me. Their nails are black, hard to see were the vain is, I would rather pay the cost, then freak out if I should make them bleed. With my girls I did as you do,sat in the chair, lay them on their backs, I had a good view of their nails, until that accident. Good luck |

Has anyone on here tried those trimmers that spin and grind the nail down. Thought about trying one because I'm always worried to cut too low. I know I don't cut as far as I can and should and thought that might be easier. Get the Oster Nail Trimmer, 1 pk for less at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better. |
I can relate. Teddy is great, but Max is almost impossible. I cheat and walk the boys on rough pavement daily to grind down their nails. :D Trim after a bath and the nails are easier to cut. Be confident or you will make your dog nervous and more likely to squirm more. Keep styptic powder or corn starch on hand in case you cut the quick and cause a bleed. Take only a little of the nail off at a time to prevent cutting the quick. Work on nail trimming often so your pup gets accustomed to it. Even if you fake it, get the trimmers out. Praise and reward. |

I had a foster pup that had a huge temper tantrum every time I tried to trim her nails. Her forever mom said she has the groomer do it or the vet. Good luck with that and I can relate! |
We have a dremel, but she doesn't let me do it on all her paws. So I take her to the vet to have them struggle with her.:( |
I feel your pain. I groom him. But cutting his nails he will not have any of it. I get my vet office to do it. They don't charge much |

Thanks Thanks everyone, I am going to bring him to the groomer tomorrow. I will let you know how its goes. Hopefully she has experience with difficult dogs!! I am not going to have her put that rope around his neck whereas he has had the mild cough since I brought him home. So I hope she can still do it. |
