I need advice HI ! Lana is my yorkie baby andshe is 5 months old. Im a new pet owner and just need a bit of advice. I got her from a lady for free ( said she didnt have the time for her) and she looked like she needed some love so I didnt mind taking her. I discovered that she had earmites and quickly got her treated. And im now working on obedience training. She eats her own poop sometimes, is that something that i should worry about? She is on Royal Canin starter food and I re hydrate to make it soft. Should i allow her to eat it hard ? Is royal Canin a good food? Should I move her to the junior food? Im looking into purchasinf a Kong her for her. Anyone use Kongs with their yorkie ? Any advice would be extremly helpful. Thanks in advance. p.s. We are stationed in South Korea so I do not have easy access to alot of things. And Im not 100% sure if she is from a puppy mill or not. I just know that she gives me back all of the love that I give her |
Poop eating is something most dogs engage in at some time or another. Just show your intense displeasure when you find her doing it or find poop on her muzzle and remove her poop the moment it comes out of her when you are around at the time of her pottying. Most dogs soon learn we won't get close to them or kiss or cuddle with them for a long, long time after seeing any evidence of poop-eating and they soon learn our reactions are very unpleasant and long-lasting so mine have always moved on after a few weeks of poop-eating. |
Thank you, I read that some puppies do it to "clean up" so hopefully after her rabies shot when i start to walk her outside it will get better |
Poop eating is fairly common but it can be a real problem for some. If it gets to be a big problem there are additives you can add to her food that will make her not want to eat her poop. It would be good to let her eat the dry kibble if she likes it. As for if Royal Canin is a good food, it is just a matter of opinion. Some people don't like it because it has corn in it. I would leave her on the puppy food until she is at least a year old. |
Feeding her a little pineapple at mealtime will help with the poop eating! There are threads on it here and you can google it too. Good luck with your little one! :) |
pineapple worked for us....Lilah was a major poop eater and stopped when I added pineapple to her food (And if I forgot to add it, she started eating the poop again, so I know it was the pineapple that helped) |
She should be able to eat the food dry. Also give her pineapple for the poop eating . . Good luck |
I think it is so nice that you were willing to take the little girl to your home when the lady said she did not have the time for her. It is so sweet that she is returning the love you show her. She sounds like she will be very happy to have you for her momma now. I hope you are soon able to break her from eating her poop. I had never heard of using pineapple in their food. Wish I had heard of that when my Joey used to do that. I just used to go ewwww, ewwww, ewww, and shake my hands in the air when he did that so he could see that it was an icky thing to do and he eventually stopped it. You said that it was not so easy to get things there where you are. You can always look online to shop for her for things you want or need but can't get where you are located. Best to you and your liitle one and a long, healty life for her. |
We bought the tiny Kong for our two Yorkies, and the canned treat food you can spray inside them (like canned spray cheese). They chew on them for a long time trying to get the spray out. It comes in three or four flavors. |
We are using Royal Canin for little Bella, without water and she seems to be fine. It was recommended to us by the Vet. She had the same problem... eating her poop! I was just as worried as you are, but it seemed to pass very quickly. I wouldn't stress to much about the poop eating, as previously said, it is quite common and will soon pass. So glad you decided to love and protect her, that's all she really needs. |
:welcome4: :yorkietal :welcome4: Welcome to you and your precious little Lana. What a sweet yorkie angel you are, taking in little Lana and making her a loved member of your family. I agree with the other posters, Royal Canine is recognized as a good quality food, and if little Lana is doing well on it, then fantastic. I do agree that it would be a good thing if she would eat the kibble dry, though. |
