doggie door I could use some advice on getting my dog to go in and out of a doggie door . He will go in and out of it all day long "if" I tape the flap open. Would really like to have this problem solved before the weather gets cold. Any idea's would be appreciated. Thank you ms kay and Mr Bailey. |

I don't have any personal experience with doggie doors, but was thinking if the flap is see through maybe stand on the other side and hold a treat he loves so he can see it and maybe go through to get it. If it's not see through, maybe he would be more conformable going through if he can see on the other side. |
My baby-girl Kimchi, has only learned recently that she can open a door "further" if it's cracked ^^; I'd try having them sit in front of it and let them see it can be opened by maybe having their paws on it, or showing it can be opened or, if there's no other dogs, have a decent sized toy that's tied to a string/rope and pulled through it so they can see it's possible to go through it. Just a thought anyways. lol we have older dogs and she follows by example at times. |
Cali does not weigh enough to push the door out of her way so I made one out of heavy weight clear plastic that I purchased at the fabric store. It is light enough for her to move and still falls back into place. Probably not as tight a fit as the original one, but works well enough that I sacrifice some "air leakage" for the convenience of her being able to use it. |
I tried treats with Callie and honestly I pushed her through once or twice but what really helped with her was going to my moms house and watching her dogs go through there's and wanting to go with them. I do have to warn you with small dogs like under 10 pounds it's not a good idea for them to have a doggy door unless they are going into an inclosed like dog run with a top. Otherwise they could become food for another animal or get into trouble. They could also be stolen or even let out by little kids wanting to play. I have one but my yorkie is 17 pounds and our fence is less then two years old and I check it regularly to make sure there is nothing wrong with it. Every time Callie goes out generally someone is watching her from the door or window. Doggy doors can be great but with smaller dogs there are a lot of precautions you need to take. |
I have tried treats. I really think the problem is he is scared of the clicking sound it makes when it shuts. The door goes out to a upper deck that is totally secure. I added a canopy to keep it shaded and put down artificial grass. |
I may give that fabric idea a shot, sounds like that may work. I just knew you all would come up with some wonderful idea's. Thanks all! :) |
