He won't eat Help me!! I have a 6 month old yorkie and he won't eat his food he eats Cesar and royal canin that's what the breeder fed him We tried pieces of hamburgers but he won't eat the vet said something about hypogemceric induced seizure What can we feed him or cook for him to eat |
Was he a good eater and then suddenly stopped? Did the vet do any blood tests? |
At 6 months old, he should be past the point of becoming hypoglycemic easily. My little one sometimes goes 24hours without eating (he's 5 and weighs 8 lbs, but he has been a poor eater since I got him at 8 weeks old). Changing the food a lot can make him an even pickier eater. I know many people home cook and cater specifically to their dogs likes and dislikes, but I have found that if I put out his food (a measured light 1/4 cup twice a day), Huey will eventually eat when he gets ready to. If he hasn't eaten what is in his bowl by the next scheduled mealtime, I just leave it until he does and feed again when it is gone. He eats Blue Buffalo Freedom. I have found that if he won't eat, if I put his food in a treat toy (his favorite is the Nylabone Romp 'n Chomp wobbler), he goes nuts and will eagerly eat it all as quickly as he can get it out of the toy. This is the only way my hubby can get him to eat if I am out of town. |
Yeah I train with their food because I don't want them to get a taste of anything else. Once you start they get picky about everything. Pick one food and stick with it. Check the teeth maybe teething and you may have to add a bit of water to soften so it can be chewed. I change flavors every time I buy a new bag. |
Just make sure they are drinking. If not drinking or eating get to vet. Dehydration can set in fast and their maybe something medically wrong. |

Have you tried wet food? There may be a canine wet version of the food you're feeding him. For some reason dogs find it to be very appetizing. Dog kennels use wet food when they have dogs that won't eat due to separation anxiety. This will also provide some hydration if he isn't drinking. If the behavior continues regardless I would say take him to the vet. |
We have had lots of luck with Freshpet roasted chicken and acana dry. You can buy a tiny bag ($3.50) of Acana dry and use it as a treat first. Freshpet smallest bag is 1.75 lbs and has to be used in a week once you open it but dogs love it. |

Feeding hamburgers and other table food puts your dog at risk for pancreatitis and other serious digestive problems. This can be deadly and result in big vet bills, sometimes $1500 or more just to treat pancreatitis. Keep working on your parents. Have them read some threads here about dogs who have become very sick from eating the wrong things. Ground beef is sometimes used in homecooking for dogs, but it is prepared differently than a hamburger for humans. Like others who commented above, I use kibble for my dogs' rewards. Helps make them love their kibble. I also had to play games and essentially hand feed Max his first year. |
