New Baby - Chase! Hello Everyone! I am new here! Im so excited to announced that I will be getting a new baby soon, Chase! I will be picking him up in about 4 weeks ! I am so excited for him. I am slowly gathering things together for him (currently have harness, carrier, bowls, and nutracal) ! I am going to get the others things this weekend! Is here anything you recommend? I have been debating on the premium food for him... I am debating between Wellness and Royal Canin... any advice? |

I put my girl on Wellness Core (grain free) and try to keep her diet to either low or free of grains. Granted we give her bits of croissant rolls & boiled chicken for her breakfast ^^;; the rolls/breads are the most wheat type grain I will allow her have and only in moderation. I may switch her to the regular wellness (toy breed) that has grains like rice in the food if she and the other two really don't like the adult "small breed" Core later on. So far I love how the wellness is working for my dogs. Ever since I got my yorkie girl, I switched to the wellness for my other two older jack russells, as well (granted they all eat the puppy formula) and they've been eating more hardy than before. We used to have an almost full bowl for almost a week, but now it needs to be filled every other day or so. Royal Canine I hear is good as well, but so far Wellness has been good for my babies. But if i do ever switch from Wellness in general, I'd most likely go with Royal Canine. |
Hi and welcome to YT! I am preparing for a puppy too, but we won't be getting her until October. What an exciting time! I would definitely recommend you get a collar with a bell on it, so he can get use to having a collar on and the bell will help you know where he is at all times and prevent accidentally stepping on him. Potty pads can also be a wonderful thing to have on hand in case you have to leave him home for long periods of time. I also would recommend looking into what's called a snuggle pup. This is helpful for over night when they are in their crate. Should prevent long nights of crying and can help prevent separation anxiety. Hi and welcome to YT. I put Remy on Fromm Gold puppy when I got him from the breeders. It's another good dog food. Get him lots of chewy toys, schedule a vet appointment, toothbrush, dog toothpaste ( I use Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic vanilla & mint), dog shampoo, brush, comb, flea medicine (ask your vet what they recommend if you are planning on using it), blankets, pee pads, bed, dog pen, crate ( if you plan on using one). Remy only sleeps in his crate at night (he is too little to sleep in my bed right now, so I have the crate on my side of the bed. I'm sure others will add to the list. Hi and WELCOME to YT! Congrats on your almost new baby! :) Make sure you have some Nutrical on hand, a puppy harness (never put leashes on a yorkie's collar), bed, toys, food, treats, pee-treats. As far as food, I'd choose Wellness...but they're both decent foods. |
Mine was 7 weeks when I got him and he was sleeping in his crate and fine from the very first night. Hold off on the snuggle pup - they adjust very quickly (no more than three nights). Put a stuffed animal from the litter and mom in there and they will be fine. I gave my breeder a stuffed animal and she had them all put their scent on it. If she is not local then mail her one. It doesn't have to be a big toy, small toys are just as good. |
I don't give treats, I give dry kibbles of their food as treats. It's healthier for them and keeps their diet balanced. When my pup was trying to transition from wet to dry food, I started working with him and fed his dry kibbles for treats. It helped him convert to dry food easier. Harness and leashes you can hold off on til they can go outside which is 16 weeks, after shots and heartworm meds administered. |
The biggest thing for basic needs is crate with a blanket and crate mat and a pen to put the crate in that contains potty pads, toys and food dishes in a room that is safe (like a kitchen). The crate is like their den and safety place for sleeping. You leave the door open on the crate so they can go in and out of the pen to potty, get water, eat etc. |
Hi there, hope your little Chase is doing well. I have Bella on Royal Canin... Vet's suggestion and it's working out fine for her. I also bought a basket for her and let the mother sleep in it for a couple of days in order for her to get mommy's smell when she's alone. We've had her for almost 2 months now and she's doing just great. Like one of the other yorkie owners said, they get use to something very quikely, so be careful what you introduce to him in means of sleeping arrangements etc. Good luck and enjoy the new bundle of energy! |
