Great site and wanted to ask a couple questions,


We will be picking up our 11 week old yorkie on Saturday. I am not use to having a small dog. Always was raised with German Shep's but my 9 year old daughter wanted a small dog to play with when she is over at my Apt. :)


At first I was like HA!! my buddies would laugh at me walking a small dog "not manly enough". NOWAY in the world I would EVER own a small breed dog. Well a few months ago I met a Yorkie over at a friends house and I couldn't believe how fast that little girl won me over!! If I could of taking her home I would of LOL. I was in LOVE. So I started my search. Much to my surprise I couldn't believe what crazy breeders were out there peddling "Yorkies".


I found a couple breeders within a couple hour drive, so my daughter and I were off to see them. I refuse to ship a pup sight unseen and not able to met the parents or breeder. Some say its ok but that's not my style.


So after meeting the 2 breeders, I felt really comfy with the one we went with. So were picking the little girl up Saturday. My daughter was heart broken we didn't bring her home that day but I NEVER take money when I go look at a pup. Stops the urge to impulse buy. :) :)


Ok back to my questions.


Since I work during the day I was thinking of hiring a dog walker to come in once a day to let the pup out to potty and play with her for an hour. Should the sitter also feed the pup?

No one? Any tips, suggestion's?

Glad you found Yorkie Talk. You will find an enormous amount of information here. I have 2 Yorkies and I think finding someone to check up on your dog while you work is a good idea. I'm sure others will be along shortly to offer their knowledge.

Hmm, it depends if you intend to free-feed her or have her on scheduled meals. Scheduled meal do help out in her potty training some as it controls when and how often she goes. Depending on her weight she would be eating frequently but in small amounts. Like 3-4 times a day and it would on average 1/2 cup for the whole day, you would look on the feeding suggestion on the bag for better amount frequency suggestion. The richer/premium foods are usually not given as much. you'll have to consider that she has a tiny tummy, so she's likely to not eat as much at a time or need to eat as much in general as the bigger dogs you're used to.
Also note that yorkies tend to get hypoglycemic at a young age, so have some nutrical on hand or something similar (a little dab will do when giving it and be sure to have her eat something soon afterwards to keep her stable) for when she gets shaky or emergencies. Especially when picking her up for travel as travel can possibly stress her out. Don't give her too much of it as it's basically like giving her candy for a quick pick-me-up. As she gets older, it usually lessens most of the time. This is where free-feeding is helpful. Free-feeding allows her to eat whenever she feels like it and will reduce chances of a hypoglycemic problem. Yorkies are usually pretty good at self control when eating. Of course each individual varies :3

For a pup that young I would suggest leaving the food out all day. Little puppies need to eat often or can risk hypoglycemia. Google hypoglycemia in yorkies to get some tips to avoid this. Others on here can share some tips too! Luckily I never had to deal with this when Lexi was really young, but I know many have and it can be deadly if you are not prepared.
