A live bat trapped in a Wilmington garage on Aug. 6 is Will County's fourth confirmed wildlife rabies case of 2014, according to the county health department.

A puppy trapped the bat and was found with the animal in its mouth, according to the health department. Will County Animal Control was notified and the bat's rabid status was confirmed the next day.

Because the puppy had yet to receive its first rabies vaccination, all three dogs living on the property will be subject to home observation for six months, according to the health department.

The health department also recommended that the two adults living on site receive post-exposure treatment.

"In Illinois, bats remain the principal rabies concern," Will County Animal Control administrator Lee Schild said in a statement. "It is important to remember that any contact with bats should be reported to the most appropriate animal control authority as soon as possible. Any contact with wild animals is reason for concern, but bats are especially problematical because of the rabies history they have established across the state."

Parents should educate their kids to understand the health risks of wildlife interaction, according to the health department.

It was the second Wilmington rabid bat confirmation this summer, with the first testing positive on June 17.

Rabid bats have also been found in Braidwood and Joliet, according to the health department.
