Switching to a new dog food I have had my smokie (yorkie) for two weeks. He is three months old. When I brought him home the breeder gave me some food. I have been feeding him the food for the last two weeks. Yesterday I started gradually switching him over to a new dog food (Organix puppy food). Tonight he started getting loose stool. I am doing 75% old food and 25% new food. Is this common in puppies when switching to a new food? What should I do at this point? Continue with the switch or go back to the old food. I read on-line to add a little canned pumpkin to his food and that will help with the diarrhea. I will have to switch pretty soon because I don't have alot of the food left from the breeder. Thanks...... |
You could try adding some pumpkin for a few days...and also try only adding about 10% of the new food. I wouldn't let the looser stools continue for too long or it could turn worse and you don't want him dehydrating. If you have to go back to the old food, it's okay...you can always switch again later. Btw, look at the ingreds of both bags....is the main protein or carb source different on the new bag? If yes, you may want to switch to the same protein in a new food. In other words, if chicken is the main meat/protein in the old food, you may want to also use that protein in the new food. |
