Confused on vaccinations and tests required... Gizmo received his reminder card from our vet. I know he does not need the Bordatella. Does he need fecal-ova+parasite+giaria and strongid susp dewormer? He gets revolution every month so I'm not sure if he needs a dewormer. Gizmo is 9 1/2 months old. Any help would be appreciated. |
I've read that deworming once a year after the 6 month age is recommended for indoor dogs and twice for active outdoor dogs and having a fecal test done at the time isn't so bad of an idea. But then I read somewhere else that deworming monthly in general is recommended after 6 months. Guess it depends on location and the vet and whether you're using something that includes heartworms w/deworming. Granted, I've never had to deworm any of the dogs I've had/have beyond the puppy stage or when they show actual signs of having worms. But lately I'm thinking a once a year treatment would be a good idea. But your pup should've been past the general recommended deworming scheduling, unless they are trying to go for monthly treatments. I'd talk with the vet to see why they think another test and deworming is necessary, cause unless there's something that makes you think he needs a dewormer again, then I'd wait awhile. I'd personally liked to avoid any unnecessary treatments, as I don't want my dogs to be constantly pumped with chemicals and stick with core and required treatments. But that's just me :p |
I'm confused. I don't think you deworm unless the dog has worms. You would need a fecal sample/test done to find this out. Heartworm medication should be given monthly (i.e. Heartguard Plus). IMO bloodwork should be done yearly, as well as a heartworm/lyme test, and a general check-up. Dentals as needed. At 9 1/2 months old, no vaccines should be due quite yet if he had them at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, etc. Then usually at one year old they booster for the DHP and rabies. Following thereafter, the current protocol is typically every 3 years thereafter. But most research and evidence points to 5-7+ years. |
Thanks Brister, that's what I thought. I'm switching vets cuz I'm not very comfortable with the one I have. I'll see what the new vet says on Friday. |
Money, money, money!! I think they have started teaching improving profit margins at Vet school. I do stool with heartworm test annually (heartworm is mandatory to renew prescription as could be serious problem if not done). Parvo, Distemper, 3 or 4 shots spaced out to build max imunity, rabies and the one year Parvo, Distemper booster(then every 2 or 3 years after that). If you take to groomer a Bordatella immunization, I like the drops on tongue, is a good idea also. |
