Spaying!! Hello I was wondering if spayig my 1 and a half year old yorkie would be a good idea. She is about 7 pounds and is in great healthwe went over with the vet the pros and cons and this seems to be a good idea but he said there are risks to spaying her such as my dog developing cancer after spaying since the endocrine system doesnt realize the reproductive syste isn't there. As well he said all of the surgery will be around 800 dollars. If you guys will tell me more about about spaying that would be great.Oh and if you know any vets who spay for low price in the D.C area or Rockville that will be great. Thank you! |
I would most defiantly spay your girl. Here is a good article explaining the benefits. How Will Spaying Change My Dog? | ASPCA Make sure you pick a Vet that is experienced in small dog spay’s. Ask if they have a Vet Tech monitoring while the Vet is performing the spay- make sure you get pre op blood work done. $800 is a lot of money- I never heard of a spay in that amount. Your Yorkie has the same profile as Crystal, who had the op about 7 weeks back. She had stomach problems (diarrhea) afterwards and took a week to recover to anything like she was before. It's no small procedure, she also was bladder incontinent for two weeks, which really upset her, because she's such a clean little girl normally. I weighed up the lower chances of summary tumors in later life, versus the distress of surgery and opted for the former. If I could have known she'd have a sweet life until she was fifteen - I wouldn't have gone ahead. No matter how eloquently expressed, spaying is a lot for a small creature with small organs to endure. She recovered slowly and thanks to the help, support, friendship and love I was afforded here so did I! Now 6 weeks on the event is a receding memory for me and long forgotten for her. I think it's right to do it, because they can't make the decision for themselves. They need our sentient wisdom, judgement and trust to endure some discomfort in their younger days, when their strong, to help them prevail in later life, with reduced resistance. In short I'd do it again and every time. |
There are alot of low cost spay clinics. I had my cats done at one and you didnt have to income qualify. Start by asking your local humaine society what clinics are out there. I found out about mine by talking to neighbors |
Wow, $800 you could buy another yorkie o_o My vet quoted around $125 (and that's for the spay and whatever that involves in itself) and even with the other stuff I want done (teeth extraction, micro-chipping), it shouldn't cost me too much over $200. Yeah, I'd go with another that that's more reasonable ^^;; |
