Paw Chewing
 
My friend has a year old Yorkie who has started chewing her front paws. They have tried benadryl, bitter apple, and other tricks to get her to stop. She doesn't seem to be itching anywhere else. She only goes out on a leash, so she hasn't gotten into anything unknown. Any ideas on what this is or how to stop it?

Have you checked to make sure there is no burrs or debris caught up in her paw hair or nails too long etc? I know Buster chews his paws when he is having a food allergy reaction.

I would think it could be allergies and trying to get her to stop by using something that tastes bad would be cruel. It would be like putting oven mitts on you and saying you can't scratch your itch. I would talk to the vet about it.

Rosie has done this before and it's usually linked to seasonal allergies with her. And of all things, her allergy was grass! Have you tried washing her paws off in combination with the benedryl? When Rosie's got bad I took her to vet and they gave her a shot.

Sakura has seasonal allergies everytime the seasons changes and has itchy paws. When it gets really bad I give her some prescription Vetadryl. Benadryl just made her throw it up. I also see that if the hair between her paw pads starts getting long she chews too. Keeping her paws trimmed helps too.

If the Benadryl didn't do anything I would say get the fur trimmed between her paw pads. It always helps Sakura. :)

Bevo has chewed his front legs in the same spot since he was a pup. He is about to be 6. We call it "sucking" his thumb because I think he does it to soothe himself. He hasn't lost any hair ever in the area, so I don't think he's hurting himself at all. We just know that's part of his personality. Maybe this is the case with your friends Yorkie?

Paw chewing and licking is THE cardinal sign of allergies in dogs - their paws itch and irritate them when they're having allergies, hence, the need to chew/lick them. You need to get to the vet and discuss your options for treating allergies. Also, read more here:

I agree with BabyGirl Rosie and Wylie's Mom, it sounds like allergies. Sophie Kate has seasonal allergies but I had no idea until I took her to the Vet because of her chewing at her feet.

Please advise your friend to take the baby to the Vet.
