Are mom's always like this My family of Yorkies has me puzzeled, the mommy dog is being real mean to her baby,he is 6 weeks and totaly off of her,yet now she has started to fight with him, like bitting his head and paws, its like she is trying to teach him how to fight,is this normal, daddy is still soft and playful, yet its the mom that is ruff, can anyone tell me if this is a normal behavoral for a family of this breed, have never seen this before in maltese or bassetts, looks like she is ready to move him out of her house, yet I know he needs to stay for a few more weeks, any insight on this would be a big help..thanks |
I have always seen that when they are eating on their own, the mamas will be "ruff" with them. Now I have never had a litter of yorkies but I have had a few other dogs have puppies over the years. I was always told that is was their way of teaching them to be on there own. |
Mom is correcting the pup. This is actually good for the development of him. I wouldn't be TOO concerned at this point. My mom had started correcting hers at 5 weeks...growls followed by little nips. |
Bitsy still does this to Bailey and Charlie if they are getting on her nerves, LOL, and they are over 9 months old. It's like she has to remind them who's boss!!! :) |
Iv seen it with a german sheppard. My m.i.līs german sheppard has 7 pups and they are just over 2 months old now. They eat on their own although sometimes they will still go for her boobs (ouch! those teeth!). When the mother is eating, the pups musnt bother her..if one tries to eat WITH her,he or she gets a nip or gets pushed away. She is also very rough sometimes,it would be interesting to know exactly why. Maybe he or she is being cheeky in doggie language? lol. |
Maybe mom is BOSS and just making sure everyone knows it ? |

A few minutes ago I heard a yelp and went to see what was going on. Zowie pranced over for me to pet her leaving her chew bone helpless on top of the couch. Teddy jumped up on the couch, up the back, grabed the bone and jumped off the back - ran to the cage and SUCCESS was his. He is still trying. Oh, unknown who cried or why - but everyone is fine. |
Oh, your right she is the boss of the house, the male is sweet all the time, but she has earned her title the B..ch,but she will wake him up while he is in his own bed to nip and growl at him, at first I thought it was because he is not very good at the peepad, missing 90%of the time, now I think she knows somethiong that I don't,she is still eating his poops, yet I guess she is correcting the baby for something she finds and does not like..oh well, you said it she is the house boss |
