New Yorkie lover Hi, I just purchased a yorkie girl at 8 weeks at 22oz. Her mother weigh 5lbs & dad weigh 3lbs The breeder said she weigh this much now Because she had been regular feeding and was Still latching to mom. Breeder stated that she would start Loosing weight while eating just regular food only Being that the mom stop letting puppies latch on Because they have teeth now.. Is this normal? |

As for what she said, I've never heard about them losing weight like that, ever, unless something is wrong with them. She is less than 2lbs and only 8 weeks old, so I certainly hope she gains some weight. |
So is she suppose to be bigger than that At 8 weeks? And I thought that 8 weeks was Too early but I've been told by multiple ppl At 8 wks it's ok to receive puppy. |
:welcome4: :yorkietal :welcome4: Welcome to YorkieTalk. It is always a pleasure to welcome a fellow Georgian. Your breeder has some unusual ideas about rearing pups. I admit that I have limited breeding experience, but I would never force wean pups, unless the mother's or pup's health was compromised. Forced weaning is way too stressful for everyone involved. And I would never place pups prior to 12+ weeks of age. Each pup is evaluated individually and placement age determined according to each individual's readiness. Having pups lose weight at weaning is not something I am familiar with. Around three or four weeks, I start offering the pups a mush made up of ground up puppy food and goat's milk. Most of the mush goes ON rather than IN the pups - and is given with Mom around so that Mom can start teaching the pups to lap up food. When the pups start teething I offer dry kibble to munch on, under supervision of course. If your pup grows according to one of the Yorkie Growth Chart that has proven to be fairly accurate for me, an eight week old pup at 22 ounces will mature out between 4 and 4.5 pounds. With that said, growth charts are just guides that not all pups follow. Good luck with your new little one. Would love to see pics! |
8 weeks is acceptable by law but a good breeder will keep them till 12 wks. |

At eight weeks they can't chew hard food too well yet. Make sure you mix in some water with the dry food to make it soft and add a teaspoon full of wet dog food. I make the days worth in the morning then refrigerate and take out for each meal and microwave for about 9 sec to take the chill off. Here is my receipe: 1/4 dry food, 1 tablesp wet and add about two tablespoons water, stir/shake. Seal the container and refrigerate. As they get older and have more teeth you can make it drier and cut the wet food u til eventually go all dry. I give mine (12 weeks) the dry kibbles as treats and put a wee bit in the bowl between meals so they have access to food all the time. |
