What Am I doing Wrong I have had Sammi home for 3 weeks. He is 19 weeks old now. I have pee pee pads in the kitchen because that's where he stays when we go to work and at night when we are sleeping. He will go on the pads. I take him out every hour when I am home with him. He will pee outside but then only 10 minutes after being in will go over to the pee pee pad and pee. How can he go outside and then 10 minutes later go again. I thought they could hold it longer then that. Maybe he is not fully releaving himself outside. I hate to take the pads up because I know he will just go over to that spot and pee. Am I doing something wrong? At 5 months old how long should he be able to hold it in. |
Basic rule is 1 hour for every month of age. Keep him out a bit longer on the walks... may be combo marking/peeing. Walk him till he runs out of pee. |
I always walked my other dogs because we didn't have a big yard but now that we moved we have a huge yard and it is fenced so I don't usually walk Sammi but I think I might have to. So he gets it all out. I am afraid he is marking because he is a male. I guess I just have to have patience. |
I agree w/ Kat, I'd walk him longer/keep him outside longer. Have you read the potty training guides in our General Training section? If not, check them out - there are some really good ones! |
It seemed like my Sophie would not stop peeing. I wa:animal-pas taking her out every 1/2-1 hr. Even my vet told me she should be holding longer. Well, at about 6 months poof. She started going every 3-4 hours. Sometimes it just takes a lot of time and patience. I always had 100 lb dogs so their bladders were much larger and easier to train. Hard work but worth it in the long run. Enjoy your baby. |
Thanks everyone, I know patience, patience!! I don't mind if he goes on the pee pee pad but today he just walked right into the livingroom and peed on my oriental rug!! I picked him up right away and put him outside midstream!! I was told they can hold it a hour per how old they are. So that means he should hold it for 5 hours!! Ya right!!. Oh I can't wait until he is trained. I forgot how hard a puppy can be. its been 20 years since I had one!! |
