How Much Orijen Should I Give A 3 Month, 3 Pound Yorkie Daily? I was giving her a cup a day, and it was causing her to get diarrhea & bloody stools. My vet told me to give her less than a cup a day, because the high protein & some of the fillers in the food is way to much for her body to handle. How much should I give her daily, because the bag doesn't tell you how much to give a 3 pound yorkie? |

Well, looking online, the bag does say for a 4.4 lb. puppy to give 2/3 cup a day. So if you're pup is less than that you should be giving a little less than 2/3 cup. I would say probably close to 1/2 cup. |
Have you thought of trying a different food? In my opinion at that age they should be free fed. |
Ok thanks. I decided to try 1/2 cup to see how it goes before I made the post. I hope it works out. I love orijen, so I don't want to use another brand. Wish me luck. |
I thought about that, but the ingredients in other foods have so many things in it that shouldn't be in it. I'm a firm believer that if I don't know what the ingredients are I won't buy it, especially if you can't even pronounce the words. lol |

I would ask my vet or a canine nutritionist to recommend a food that doesn't cause my little one to have bloody diarrhea, even if I couldn't pronounce some of the words. If an otherwise very healthy food is bad for your particular dog, then it's best to steer away from that food for the dog's own good. Even very occasional diarrhea causes dogs to lose vital fluids, electrolytes and even blood - all of which could result in her going down at some point. There are enough healthy foods out there that you likely could be referred to more than one that probably wouldn't trigger an IBS type reaction and cause her to have diarrhea, lose fluids and bleed from irritation and inflammation associated with just having bowel movements. |
I would be very concerned about the blood in the stool. Can you share with us what type of treatmeant your Vet did for the dog? Did you have to provide a fecal sample? Did the Vet do a blood test? I am not a medical professional but I do not think overfeeding would result in a bloody stool. Maybe someone can advise me differently. |
Bloody stools can be very, very dangerous...so please be aware of that. Is it bright red blood or dark/blackish? Your baby is still a VERY young puppy, and it's important that you know that continuing diarrhea/bloody stools can actually result in death in a puppy bc of quick dehydration. In my opinion, something is very much irritating her GI, and if I were you - I'd put her back on the food she was on before all this started...stabilize her, get her SAFE and back on track. Then, if you want to switch foods -- you do it very slowly...and you may want to avoid whatever protein and carb sources that are in the Orijen you're currently using. PLEASE be very, very cautious bc puppies can go down VERY fast...remember, she's only been alive for 12 weeks -- that's SO young, vulnerable, and remember that all her systems are still immature at this point. Edited to add: also, I'd get this pup checked for giardia. And lastly, make sure you don't get ANY add'l puppy vaccines until she is stable again! |
I just thought of something you are in Maryland and when Callie was sick like a week ago she had diarrhea several times in one day and we took her to the vet and the vet said the last two weeks she had seen many dogs come in with this problem and Callie had to get medicine, get IV fluids, and go on a bland diet for three days. This could also be what your pup has if she was tested for things and nothing came back positive. |
I agree that she should be seen by a vet to make sure it's not an infection. Something is definitely irritating her stomach. Once you get things figured out and your baby is doing better, you can gradually introduce Orijen again (another protein preferably) to see if it's the cause of her stomach distress. There are other good brands, so I would switch, but you can also consider Acana, which is also made by Champion foods. The protein is still high, just less than Orijen, and they also have some single protein foods. Fromm is a good food, and so is Nature's Logic, but there are many others, too. I hope your little girl gets better soon. |

That's true. I will see what happens with the smaller amount. If the bloody stools come back again. I will see what other food is out there. |
