Possessive/Over Protective???? Hi All, I have a question about my little boy (9 mths old) being possessive/over protective. This started about 2 months ago when I first noticed it. Anytime my husband comes close to me Remy will start growling/barking at him. I figured it was because I am home with him all day/everyday and I am his primary caregiver. He doesn't try to bite him at all. My husband puts his hand in front of him and he goes crazy licking it. I thought he was only doing this with my husband until I went to Va. to visit my family and he did it there also. They all thought it was cute because he is so little and was already being protective. Needless to say, my husband was holding him the other day and I got close to my husband and he did the same thing to me. So tonight we go to Dairy Queen and when the lady handed my husband the ice cream he did the growling & barking at her. He was fine when the lady was talking to us, it was the minute she reached in to give us our order. Does anyone else's dog do this and how can I correct this behavior? I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance! |
Hmm..I'm not the greatest trainer at all, but I would say no and interrupt the behavior and change his position, ie "No!", then hand to someone else and/or put him down immediately and redirect him to doing something else. |
Our yorkie Kinder is four years old and if someone comes up to me to shake hands or hug me that is it. Kinder will growl and nip at them. Now I just do not let people touch me. She is fine when they pet her but touch me no. She is like that with my husband too. Both of us do tell her no and she seems to understand. The no word helps but we still do not want other people touching us while we hold her. Kinder is just being protective in our arms; she loves people and gets along well with them. If someone we know very well wants to pet her we sternly tell her be nice in our arms. Then again she loves people. Also she does sense people that are mean to animals. We knew a couple who were not nice to their pets and Kinder growled and barked at them. I think dogs are very smart they know and they are loyal to us. Susan |
He is being possessive/guarding his human and you need to stop this behavior or it will escalate. My suggestion would be to put him on the floor when he is behaving this way and tell him no or redirect him. If he was a larger dog it would not be acceptable, so he should not get a pass because he is a cute little 2 lb Yorkie. |
Thank you all so much for your suggestions and input. I have been telling him 'No' and I will continue to. The one thing I didn't do was put him down on the floor or redirect him. I will start doing that today. He doesn't have an issue with anybody touching him. He is such a friendly dog with people who interact with him. He actually acts like he is such an angel :D. He did the same thing again this morning when we were sitting on the couch and my husband came over to kiss me goodbye. He doesn't even have to be in my arms. He was just lying on the couch next to me. I'm sure I will get this corrected. I will just be persistent with the 'No's' and put him down on the floor. He is pretty smart...I think he will get the point. He is a very trainable dog. I got him to stop barking at people and other dogs every time they would walk by. I was persistent with telling him 'No Barking' and it didn't take long for him to stop. Now he will only bark if he hears someone at the door and I am fine with that because it alerts me. Megansmomma.....I got a chuckle out of your comment about not giving him a pass because he's a little dog. How true that statement can be because I can easily see that happening, but I don't want to end up with a Tasmanian Devil on my hands.... Again...thank you all for being helpful!!! |
