Smelly Yorkie Hi All! My 5 year old spayed Kelly, smells like "dog" (no pun intended) as soon as 3 days after her bath. She does not roll in anything. It is a sort of a doggy smell. Asif her hair gets oily very quickly, and I do use a good dog shampoo. She is a little dog overflowing with love. I got her from a breeder after she had plenty babies. My other little dog, Missy, NEVER has this "dog smell" and I only need to wash her every 2 weeks now in Winter here in South Africa, but Kelly just needs to be bathed every week, otherwise the smell is just too much - specially because they are spoiled and sleep on my bed. What can cause this? It is NOT the "fishy smell" due to glands. It is ...... I do not know what else to call it, but that she smells like dog. (I KNOW she is a dog!!! But, this is not normal). I'll still love her, even if it can not come right, but it will help a lot! Kind regards from me, Hentie, from Kleinmond, South Africa. |
Hentie what are you feeding her? Could she be having that smell due to the food maybe she cannot break down. Just a thought and hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in. |
Smelly Yorkie Hi Rubymoon (2072) - Thank you for trying to help. Kelly eats Royal Canin. It is one of our best brands. She also eats grated carrots and I often mix the pellets with a little chicken or other meat. Regards, Hentie. |
The only thing I could find in a google search is yeast issues that may cause smell otherwise it's the anal sacs and ear infections or bad teeth that cause smell issues. I wish I was more help. thanks for spoiling missy and kelly and I hope you find the source if there is something causing it!! :) |

Thank you Dear Rubymoon2072 - Thank you for trying to help. Fortunately it is not Kelly's teeth. I would like to give the two little girls, just pellets and tried and tried. But by the 5th day, it is I who cannot keep it up any more, specially because it is winter now here. Then I am the one that gives in and mix the pellets again with something nice....... |
Smelly Yorkie Dear Kreuer - I immediately smelled Kelly's ears now - but nothing! The smell starts 3 days after her bath, and is the smell of a dog that has not had a bath for very long - - a dog smell. My other doggy, Missy, smells clean for almost 2 weeks, but not Kelly. I put a little baby powder on her then, just to stretch the bathing until the weekend, when she is bathed again. |
Here is a good article that may explain what your dog might have: Skin Disease (Canine Seborrhea) in Dogs | petMD The problem could of been brought on by a number of things or it cold be a inherited disorder. You might want to ask the vet for any suggestions. It is something you don't see often in yorkies but it can occur. Here is another website that might be helpful too. Canine Seborrhea - Use Natural Remedies To Treat Skin Problems in Dogs I hope you can get it figured out. I know it can be frustrating. |
Do you clean her face often? Sometimes, Zoey's face gets stinky... Also, I know you said you use good shampoo but what brand/type are you using? |
Smelly Yorkie I am overwhellmed with everyone's kindness and willingness to help. I am reading everything everyone suggested again. Thank you "bjh". I will most definitely read the websites. Thank you to all. Hentie. |
Smelly Yorkie Hi Magnus - on the bottle is says "Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Oatmeal & Tea Tree Oil Infuser". Sometimes I use a little Elizabeth Anne baby shampoo, around the eyes, because I am scared that I might get shampoo in her eyes, that will burn. The vet advised the shampoo that I currently use, but no improvement. I'll read the websites that was advised and maybe get the problem solved. |

Our little Rin has Seborrhea and she also gets oily fur and a somewhat "doggy" smell. The vet prescribed Douxo Shampoo and this helps somewhat with the oiliness. But really, I still have to bathe her every week (whereas my other Yorkie can also go two weeks between baths). |
It does sound like a skin condition....I have a weenie with flea allergies and when she gets a flare up she smells like fritos....not a very appealing comparison I know but it is what she smells like! But it dies sound like it may be her skin and not her hair ? |
Smelly Yorkie 1 Attachment(s) Dear TysonMyBoy - thank you for the good ideas. It realy sounds asif your doggy and mine has the same problem. I'll read the previous websites and yours tomorrow, because here in South Africa, it is now 23:00 and I need to go to sleep!! Thank you again. I think that I realy received very good suggestions put together, from all. Hentie. |
