how long do you walk your yorkie I took winnie for a walk for like 40 mins or so she soo darn hyper all she does is play thank god we might be getting a new fur baby hopefully by sunday. How long do you walk your yorkies? |
I think it depend on the dog. My Molli has a lot of energy and can go for a half hour walk but Chibi is older and not as rambunctious, he does well with 10-15 minutes. You don't want to walk a puppy for too long and make sure they have all their vaccines before going out. If they start panting hard or lay down you may have to carry them the rest of the way. Also watch the cement and asphalt on hot summer days, it can burn their little paws. |

I think it depends on each dog and you have to build up. I always carry water for my dog unless I am walking somewhere (park) where I know it's accessible. My little guy and I used to walk or hike 3 miles several times per week up until he turned 14 and got pretty blind. He would out walk the golden retriever and a shi-tzu my friends had…the Shi Tzu had to be picked up after a mile. In the last year he still waked about 1/2 mile twice a day. He always looked forward to it…I took him early, avoided other dogs and carried a 9 iron just in case (I'm a golfer) and if you have to keep something arm's length from your dog a 9 iron works pretty darn good. Never had to use it but I'd have been ready if I need to. I swear it is what kept him so agile and strong. |
I walk Katie for at least an hour, sometimes a lot more, every day once or twice a day. Katie's pace is like a jog. I have to walk quickly to keep up with her. She listens great if I set the pace and she has to walk alongside me, but I like her getting such good exercise when she also jogs. We walk earlier and then later in the day. During the afternoon, Katie runs a lot fetching her balls. She cools off in a baby pool. I always carry water whether we are playing fetch or walking. Katie isy five years old and is used to a lot of physical activity. One of my Rainbow Bridge babies, Ashley, walked a couple of miles each day until a couple days before she passed away close to her seventeenth birthday. I believe it kept her mind stimulated and her heart and lungs strong. |
Sophie Kate goes for at least two 30 minute walks everyday weather permitting. She loves being outside and walking, we stop so she can sniff things and be a dog but for the most part we walk most the time. She is really good on short hikes also. |
When we go, we go for about 30 mins or so. They also get exercise inside via fetch. |
I feel your pain, my little one is hyper active too and if I don't walk her at least twice a day 1.5 miles each walk, she get's very bored and starts getting into trouble. She's only two so I expect her to be pretty active for a few more years. The good news is that after each walk, she takes a long nap but when she wakes up, it's back to being mischievous. |

thanks soo munch guys i notice when she starts slowing down we usuallymdo our walks in the evening its so hot during the day |
We chase balls and other toys 3 or more times a day, in the yard, for about half hour each time. Then walk, well they ride in a mobility scooter, then once we get to the field, or woods, they run for about an 3/4 hr. Caleb soon comes to rest in the scooter, then gets out again. Pip, runs the whole time. Kev goes to one end of the field and I'm at the other (when no other dogs are there) end, they run hell for leather, back and forth. (they are both on a long lines) Our border collie, gets an extra two walks, without them. |
I walk Tuck for around 15 to 30 minutes twice a day, he is only 4 pounds but we have walked up to a mile at a time, often I will have to carry him back if we go to far..he plays a lot during the day also. |
It just depends on the day. We've gone on super long walks before - like 2-3 hrs long and over 4+ miles, and then sometimes we just do short 15 min increments every now and then. Lately we haven't been walking at all because he's been swimming so much and running in the backyard. |
Joni and I get a 20-30 min walk in during the day before it's too hot then a longer one (maybe a mile) in the evening. That usually takes about an hour since she is a lollygagger. But lots of play and fetch at home. |
