Indoor Potty Training Greetings, I just got my sweet little Charlie a week ago. He is 9 weeks old and just over 1.5lbs. My fiance and I wish to train him to use either a litter box or pee pads, as he is far too small to be comfortable outside. The breeder trained him to use paper, but he seems to have forgotten all of that since coming home. We crate Charlie at night in a play pen with water, a bed, and his pee pad. He hasn't had a single nightly accident. However, during the day he has many accidents. He doesn't seem to ever want to go back to his pee pad to go. We interrupt him when he is peeing in the wrong spot and put him on his pee pad. We use the command "go potty" several times. It works about 50% of the time. When it works, he gets lots of praise and a few frozen peas (his favourite treat). Any suggestions to get sweet Charlie to remember to pee on the pad during the day? |
Sounds about right. He is only nine weeks old. It may take some time for him to go full time on his pads. My Sheldon is also nine weeks, and he will use his pad and he will go outside, but he still has accidents. It's all just a part of having a puppy...keep with it and he will get the hang of it. Good luck! |
Just wanted to welcome you to YT :)! |

Hello. I also have a sweet little Yorkie and she is 9 weeks old. :) Our situation is similar to yours. I think it is just a matter of time. But i can't wait when we will be able to go outside. |
Don't worry. It's a matter of time. We live in a two story house, and when our pup was downstairs, he used to have no clue to get back to his designated pee spot upstairs to do his business so he would just hold it and eventually had an accident. I used to have to constantly monitoring him and brought him back to his spot as soon as I see signs, then he just walk straight to the pad. Even now at 9 months he still doesn't know to use a pad anywhere else but his one true spot upstairs. Lol but thanks god when we can't take him out, he knows to go back to his spot now even when he is let roaming the house so I always lay a pee pad down for him. Now to control accidents, you should not let your pup roam the house. He should be in his pen, and let out for about 30 mins each, a few times a day. Don't give him a chance to mark your house, it will be a lot harder to train him if you let him mark the house. Know his routine is key. It's easier when you know at what time he needs to go to prevent accidents. Hope all is going great!!! |
I read on here it's impossible for a 15week old yorkie to be fully potty trained, so you've got a ways to go. |

Don't worry, he is only 9 weeks old and potty training will come with time. Just make sure you are consistent and stay positive. |
