Butt scooting (for lack of a less crass term...lol) Okay, so I know Sheldon doesn't have any parasites...he was checked last week before he came home and again today at the vet. I've seen butt scooting in dogs with worms, but I've never experienced it in a healthy dog. Is this common? Can I train this habit out of him? Husband assures me that it's just a small dog not wanting poo on his fur, but I thought I'd check here too :D |
We had and have little doggies that does it and don't have parasites. A couple of reasons could simply be that their butt itches, kind of like we randomly feel a tickle/itch on a limp and scratch it. Good chance if there's hair tickling there. It could also be irritated if they have gone done #2 frequently. Or if you wipe after them, the wipes might be irritating them or something they ate may not agree with their rear ends ^^; Sometimes they may have a scratch there or if they produced a large amount off poo it may cause a little split on the anus and thus irritating it. Or even after a vet visit when they stick thing there it can cause some irritation later. Maybe they need their glands emptied as well, but I would think the vet would've caught that. |
Full anal glands. Max had this problem once when he was a pup when the vet took a manual stool sample. Did the vet do this today or take a rectal temp? Hate to say it, but I would have the vet take a look. I would be too nervous to try to express glands on my own. Too much can go wrong if you are not experienced. I have to admit, seeing puppy Max do the scoot was hilarious, like he was rowing a boat. :p |

It is hilarious to watch, though, I agree. |

I agree with Maximo, every time he poops, just clean his butt with a cotton ball with luke warm water. |

If he does it after going to poop then I would say he just probably gets some poop stuck in his hair and is trying to get it out. My pup does this if that happens and I just wash her baby butt with a warm washcloth lol. |
If he continues I would get his anal glands checked, some dogs need these expressed more often than others. |
When my Cavalier, Luke, started doing "the butt scoot" (that's what we call it) I would haul him right off to the vet, sure he had full anal glands or worms, or something just as bad, but most times they found no problems. He's 6 now, and I realized several years ago that it's just something he does after he poos. Whether I wipe him with a baby wipe or not (when on a walk he'd be too embarrassed, jk), he always does it, preferably in the grass. It's really become a great way to keep track of when he goes! Wanted to add: Whenever my mother's Cavalier does it, for her it means her anal glands are full. You'll have to get to know what's normal for your pup! |
We call it the boot scoot and boogie. When Callie was a puppy with her furry little butt there were times after going poo we needed to use a sensitive baby wipe. |
If you're not dealing with things like impacted glands or parasites, it could just be irritation or an itch. Bentley has been dragging his bum for a couple days now, coincidentally ever since he got his hair cut and they trimmed his bum hair really short. I imagine it's similar to how my beard feels after a few days of not shaving |
