Sentinel For Dogs, a question. Shelly had his first appointment with our vet today and he was sent home with Sentinel for fleas/heart worm/intestinal worm prevention. I didn't notice until I got home, but it says for 2lbs and over, and he's not quite two pounds yet (he is 28oz). I trust my vet, but I know people make mistakes and wonder if maybe this was an oversight and I should wait. Probably best to call in the morning and double check, yes? |
Bumping up for you..I use sentinel but have no clue about the weight. I always err on the side of caution and call the vet. |
I would wait until she reaches 2 lbs. It shouldn't take but a couple of weeks. |

You could call for clarification. I agree it is best to wait until he meets / exceeds the requirements, and that is what I would do. |
I agree with everyone else about waiting until your pup reaches 2 lbs for the sentinel. You can use heartgard for now though, if you'd like. This is what I use. It says it's for 0-25 lbs but the dosage is safe for little dogs as well. I gave it to my pup at 7 months when she was about 2.5 pounds. |
I was just at the vets today with Peanut. He is 15 wks and 3 1/2 pounds. He was given his first dose of Sentinal at 11 wks 3 pounds. I would wait for the 2 pound weight. It won't take long. Better to be safe. As for Heartguard my vet said Peanut is too young for that so I don't know if it is safe in young puppies. |

We have been giving our Cody Sentinel for close to a year and he weighs about 2.9 pounds. He seems to be tolerating it well, but if you are concerned because your puppy is under 2 pounds, I would call the vet. Another alternative to Sentinel is Revolution which is a topical. |
My 4 mo pup weighs 3.4 lbs and they gave him heartgard plus 0-25 lbs and said I could cut in half and only give him half. I am wondering if I can give the other half to my other yorkie he weighs 13 lbs. Anybody doing this? |
He reached two pounds, so I was able to give it to him :) I just waited it out...he's never (well, very, very rarely at this point) outside. Since he still doesn't have all of his vaccines, I rarely take him out. He goes potty on a pad, and plays with us for his exercise right now, mostly. I figured it was better to wait and be cautious. He's covered now though. Thanks for all the replies. |
