I nearly had a heart attack! I came home this evening and before coming inside, let Maddie out to go potty. When it is dark, I tell her stay and she doesn't go to the back part of the yard where I'm always afraid there could be a raccoon or something. She went potty and then like a bolt of lightening, took off toward the back part of the yard barking her fool head off. I followed and about the time I got back there, over the fence came what I first thought was a deer...we've had them in our yard before. It wasn't a deer, but a yellow lab and it landed and went right for Maddie. I had my purse and Maddie's carrier in my hands and kept slinging them at the dog to try to keep it away from Maddie...screaming like a crazy fool...and trying to pick up Maddie, but she wouldn't stay still long enough. She was into her ferocious growling as if she was trying to fight this dog and he was doing his darndest to get to her. Scared me half to death! Finally Maddie hightailed it for the garage with the dog right behind her and me after the two of them. As Maddie got into the garage, I threw my purse which landed near the dog and startled him enough to stop and allow me to get to the door and close it with Maddie inside. Whew! I think this dog probably just wanted to play, but since Maddie was attacked by a large dog once, I will not trust a big dog anywhere near her! So...once Maddie was safe inside I got ahold of the dog's collar and then yelled..."Anyone looking for a dog?" No answer so I petted the dog a bit and then yelled again. This time I heard a guy say, "Yeah...where are you?" I told him and he came and had to climb the fence and asked how the dog had gotten over it. I told him he jumped it and he couldn't believe his dog could jump that high. I told him it had scared me because I had my yorkie out going potty when the dog jumped the fence, and he said his dog must have heard my dog and that's why he jumped the fence. He also said his dog wouldn't have hurt my yorkie, but I've heard that before. I'm still shaking from this incident. Good grief...I just wish Maddie had enough sense to just come to me and let me protect her, rather than think she has to fight this dog off on her own! She seems to think she's a big guard dog and going to protect our yard from any prowlers! What a little stinker! |
My goodness!!!!!!!! I am so glad she is alright. One thing I have really noticed is that these little guys THINK they are the big, bad guys and can do anything. |
Oh man...glad she and you are ok. I wonder how the other dog got out of its yard/house in the first place. |
well they do have that big dog attitude that they're known for. but I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. |
Maddie must have gotten totally pooped out from that ordeal because she's been zonked out ever since we came inside! I can even leave the room and she's in such a deep sleep, she doesn't get up and follow me as she normally does! One more thing I forgot to mention...after the dog owner took his dog and I went into the garage, Maddie started jumping up and down wanting me to pick her up...so I did and she immediately started kissing and kissing me...as if she was so glad I was alright. I wonder if she was worried when she was in the garage and I was out there with that big, mean dog. LOL |
Wow, I know that was scary!!!!! My darn little baby would have acted the same way. I don't you could expect many dogs to obey you in that situation unless they had been trained as a service dog. I am so glad your little Maddie is ok. whew |
OMG! My heart raced just reading your story. I am sooo glad this dog wasn't out to do any harm. Maddie is such a good guard doggie/fur baby, but I so much understand why you'd want her to not think she had to protect. |
I'm glad you had a happy ending. I hope the man apologized profusely! |
Ohman, what a scare. Mine act the same way, they will fight anybody bigger than them. I am so glad it did not go beyond that. |
Oh Connie I'm so glad Little Maddie is ok. And hope your ok now to that would have scared me to death. Hug to you and Maddie from Minnie and I Carol and Minnie |
I am so glad Maddie is ok! That is so scary, I just don't know what I would have done! |
 I know that had to be really really scary! I am glad that it turned out ok too! |
OMG!!! How frightening that was!!! Thank God, your baby is okay. I don't care what the dog...if it's determined, it will do whatever means necessarily to complete a task. I hope it doesn't happen again! |
What a scare! Does the dog live on the other side of the fence or was he just visiting? I would be afraid the same thing might happen again. I also do not trust big dogs, even though they mean no harm they are big and all it takes a wrong step or playful bite. :( |
Yes...unfortunately this dog lives nearby...just up the hill from the back side of our house. I have thought that too...that now that he's been here, he may be back. I have never seen that dog running loose before, so I think it just got away on them. I'm hoping they will be more careful in the future. I'll be watching like a hawk! I said earlier that was a lab...but it was probably a lab/golden retriever cross...and one BIG dog! I still can't believe how he came flying over our fence! I'm just so thankfull I ran back there and was there to keep him from Maddie! You just never know with big dogs...if they're wanting to play or wanting to get that little dog in their mouths and snap their little necks! |
oh my that sounds very scary. Its a good thing everything turned out ok. Hope the owner of the lab at least apologized for the startle  . |
Talk about a scare is RIGHT ! I'm so glad everything is ok and who would think when you have a fenced in yard that you have to worry about a dog jumping IN....that's one high jumping dog ! I'm so glad you were right there to save the day Mom ! |
Thank goodness you were out there, Connie! Oh my, I shudder to think what might have happened if you were not out there with her, Connie!! You are SUCH a great doggie-Mom!! I think we should get you a Wonder Woman T Shirt!!! :D |
Maddie was trying to protect you! They are such proud protectors of their families. Thank God you had the garage to put her in. |
How scary I'm glad you are both OK. |
So glad Maddie is OK! That man should bring you some flowers & Maddie a treat. Most of all he should make sure it won't happen again. Keep Safe! :) |
Oh! Thay had to be soo scary! I have a big Rottreller and a bull Mastaff living right next door. They keep jumping up on the fence growling, etc. My little one wants to go to the fence immediately when I let her out. I am so scared of them jumping the fence and getting her. I think they think she is a rabbit, as we have them in our neighborhood and they act the same when one comes by. It is a chain link fence, and I erected another one in between it, so that they would have to jump two fences to get at her. Seeing as she isn't out without me, I am hoping that I could get to her before they would think to jump the second fence! It's scary! So glad your episode ended up good! It could have been much worse! Out poor little ones! Pat |
