Very Itchy
 
Hello everyone, I have had Sammi home for about a week and noticed that he is very itchy. He is on a Turkey and Potato diet. I have applied his flea medicine. He will scratch at his stomach and ears. I feel bad because he scratches a lot, Have you ever given your puppy benydrl and did it work for the itching

Before you try an OTC medication like Benadryl Sammi really needs to be seen by the vet. It seems that he might have something other than allergies going on. Ususally, they will bit at their feet with allergies rather than scratching at their ears. When Bogey was scratching his ears it was an ear infections. Is Sammi a puppy?

He has been to the vet. It is not an ear infection. Mostly he scratches at his belly and bites his back legs and front legs. He is 4 1/2 months old.

Do you brush him?

Has he had a bath with conditioner?

Do you use ear wash?

He has had a oatmeal bath. I have brushed him. I am thinking flea bites but he does have protection on but I don't think that prevents the flea from biting him if she is outside. I use to have two other dogs and they never itched like this.

It might be food allergy... Is the food labeled "grain free"? Have you asked the vet about seasonal allergies?

hmmm, I think you would find fleas on him if fleas were biting him? Maybe the grass is an issue? My little girl scratched when I first brought her home. Using cream rinse helped.

Benadryl is safe but I would want to find out the cause first.

Yes is he is on grain free food. No soy, no eggs, no wheat. It is turkey and potato formular. It could be seasonal. He seems to be itching a lot more since I took him home. The first two days he was not bad and then it got real bad. So I was thinking the food change or fleas in my house. I do have a cat.

First check everybody :D for fleas. Then try bathing him in a shampoo other than oatmeal. That may be triggering the itch.

It would be very, very highly unusual for a puppy to have allergies of any kind, given the immaturity of their immune system. So, even though he's biting at his legs, I don't think this is allergies.

I'd stop the oatmeal baths asap as they can be irritating to already irritated skin. It's a myth that oatmeal baths are good for irritation - a Vet Dermatologist would tell you this too.

I would be most concerned w/ fleas in this case since he's a puppy and itching so badly.
