Sneezing/Reverse Sneezing makes a former large dog owner very nervous...
 
I KNOW what Sheldon is doing is simply a reverse sneeze. I know it is, but I HATE it. Lol. Being a former large dog owner, it was never really a common thing, and he does it a lot when we play.

I can tell by everything else that, as of right now, my pup is very healthy...but will I get used to this reverse sneezing thing? I get tense every time he does it...

Sort of not really... I still get bothered a bit. Especially if it lasts a while. One thing I do is rub their throat gently hoping it'll relax the muscles there and help.

His never really last more than a few seconds, but it makes me crazy! I have done the throat rub, and blowing gently on his face seems to help as well.

Don't mean to scare you but as a he is still a young puppy, I would ask my vet if it could be kennel cough. Always better to err on the safe side.

He goes to the vet this week, and he went last week. I know for certain it is not kennel cough. It's not a cough, not even close. I've heard Bordatella, this isn't it.

Bobbi, can you video it? I've not heard of a young pup having this as described, it seems unusual. A video might help. Also is it at a certain time or activity?

Lexi only reverse sneezes after drinking a lot of water really fast. I hate it too, even though I know it's not a serious issue.

Play time, more than anything. I'll try to get a video, though it generally only lasts a second or two, and it's not full on. It's almost as if a normal sneeze turns into a small snort, then he stops.

Also, everything I have read has said that reverse sneezing starting young is normal, as where sudden onset later is more cause for concern?

Max and Teddy did not do it as pups. I agree with everyone above to make sure you talk to the vet about it. Could be nothing, and I wouldn't stress over it, but with a pup I would want to rule out any problems.

The last 2 days, Max was having reverse sneezing fits that started after a trip to the park where many dogs walk. I was concerned about kennel cough, but now he is better. I think he inhaled something and got a nose/throat irritation.

Laddy reverse sneezes after he drinks but he didn't start till he was well over a year old. Thankfully Kyra doesn't do this.

When Mia gets really excited, she does the reverse sneeze. I have found a little technique that helps her stop it quickly, and she will come to me or DH for help when it starts. LOL. Knowing what it is, even when harmless, doesn't make it something you want to see your baby going through.

Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing. Such a small puppy it does seem very unusual.

Doodlebug and Bogey will occasionally reverse sneeze and I usually grab them around their muzzle and blow into their nose. But this never happens during playtime :confused:

It's called Pharyngeal Gag Reflex...it's a reverse sneez that yorkies do. Kinda sounds like a duck sound

Yes, I know what a reverse sneeze is but it seems odd that a new puppy would be doing this.....

Like I said in my first post, when mine do it what helps is to grab them around the muzzle and blow into their noses or I will rub their throat. But again, mine are not puppies and it is concerning that this is happening.

Lexi had been reverse sneezing since 3 months old, only after drinking a lot of water really fast. When mentioned it to my vet she did not seems concerned that she was doing this at a young age. Maybe I should bring it up to her again.

He goes to the vet tomorrow. It's really not that concerning, I assure you. It happens very rarely, and it is not a cough, at all. I might be looking at lifelong allergies, I think. I've noticed more and more that it is mostly around the grass in his little personal puppy patch...maybe the grass is irritating his nose. He loooooves to bite at it, paw at it, roll in it. I think he may be getting blades in his nares...lol.

My Tibbe used to reverse sneeze a good deal, especially when his tummy was upset, but once he was diagnosed with MVD and started on his hepatic diet, he stopped doing it except once in a great while.

It's definitely scary when it first starts, but once my vet told me it wouldn't harm one of my Rainbow Bridge babies, I relaxed a bit more about it. I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow.

It could be something from this patch that's irritating him instead of allergies. I think Sheldon is too young for allergies, but I'm not sure.
