Mickey has decided that his water bowl is his personal swimming pool. I have tried several ways to get him to stop it but every afternoon he starts to step into the drinking water bowl and track it all over the kitchen. It is so funny to watch but his brother, a toy poodle, isn't to thrilled to not get to the water bowl on a hot afternoon. I tried getting him into a little pool of water but he wants no part of that. He is 3 months old and quite a character. Any ideas? |
I have gone though this with some of my pups. Unfortunately there is no easy solution. Some of mine continue to dig in their water and make a big mess and they are 4 years old. One solution that worked for me a little was to put a smaller bowl inside of the bigger bowl. It just makes it a little harder for them to splash out the water. Also elevating the bowl will help too if you have something the sit the bowl on. |
Use a water bottle.... |
Cookie used to do that all the time too. What a mess it made! I guess just giving her stern NOs when she did it is what worked. Or maybe she just outgrew it, but either way she doesn't play in her water bowl anymore. |
I have an 8 yr. old Min Pin that still does this on occasion. When she does I use this time to mop the kitchen floor really good!! And when the water bowl is empty she digs in it like it's spring fed and water is just gonna come up from the bottom of the bowl. At least my other dogs can count on Sassie when their bowl is empty. If your pup looks like he is having fun then I would probably just put some towels down and let him go for it. |
dog My JoJo likes to put his toys in his water and try to dig them out spashing water all over. Just when I sit down to read my Bible and spend time with the Lord that dog will do that! Yikes, a mess to clean. He is so cute though with those whiskers dripping wet I have to laugh. Yorkies are so much fun! |
Thank you for your suggestions. I have to agree that I laugh at his antics with the water so probably haven't been the greatest trainer with him for that. He is so funny and loving that I just enjoy him. He has learned to sit in just a few sessions and is completely potty trained now at 12 weeks old. He sleeps all night long until it starts to get light and then wakes me up to take him out. What a good puppy. Again, thank you all. |

I had a yorkie that did that, so I bought a pet bowl in a stand and put it on a rubber mat with a raised lip. That kept him from being able to do this as easily and the rubber place mat with the rolled lip kept the little water that he would still splash off my wood floor. The rubber place mat was sold in the pet store, it's so dogs can drag their bowls around. |
D'oh, after playing outside on a very hot day yesterday I was trying to get Cook to drink some of her water when I brought her back in. But she wasn't too interested, so I started running my finger through her water to get her attention. So she does come over, and then sticks her paw in the water and starts playing with it! I said NOOOOOO Cookie! LOL |
