My puppy don't eat enough My 8 month old puppy is under weight and he just don't eat. He weighs 2lbs 13oz. vet says that he needs to gain at least 1/2 lb. He has started throwing up in the mornings, the yellow foam, because his belly is empty. The vet put him on Pepcid AC, to hopefully help settle his tummy. She changed his food to Pro Plan. What can I feed him, that he will eat and that will help him gain weight fast? |
He may just be a smaller boy. Do you leave food out for him all the time? Has the vet done any tests such as Bile Acid tests to rule out a medical cause for his poor weight gain? With some Yorkies, it takes a bit of experimenting to find a food they enjoy. Others need some encouragement to start by hand feeding a few pieces. Good luck. |
You might try mixing some boiled chicken with his kibble. We do this for our tiny one and it helps improve her appetite. |
What was he eating prior to the Pro Plan? Pro Plan is not considered one of the better quality dog foods because of the corn in it. You might consider a food like Natural Balance or Canidae. I am sure others on here will have some good recommendations. What is he feeding schedule? My yorkies always have their last meal around 9 p.m. Some of mine like their kibble soaked in a little warm water. I hope you can find something he likes. |
Yeah mine went through this food allergies. I switched to blue buffalo grain free gluten free no preservatives. Make sure pup eats early upon waking. Chicken boiled white meat added sounds good to help with weight gain. You can switch over to this food without getting diareahea. Good luck |
You can also try soaking the kibbles with chicken broth (no sodium). Sometimes, they'll eat better if you hand feed them. |
Thank you all for the information. Very much appreciated!! |
My Remy will be 9 months old on Aug 5th and he is only 2 lbs 3 ounces and is very healthy. He is just a small boy. His daddy is small. He eats great but he was just the runt out of the litter. |
Are you feeding him all at once? These little ones sometimes need to have free choice feeding all day...my pup used to get sick in the morning too, she was producing stomach acid in anticipation of being fed. Free feeding eliminated that. Its extremely important to watch these small ones for hypoglycemia. Even at 8 months old they can still sometimes get low blood sugar. It doesnt happen only in puppies. My little girl had trouble even at 1.5 yrs old keeping her weight and had to stay on a prescription supplement from the vet. You have to be extra careful. |
Hi Carmen....Remy's food is always out in addition with me feeding him fruits that he can have and won't harm him. He has never had a hypoglycemic episode with me. I know he had one incident when he was still with the breeder. I am always making sure he eats. His mom only had 3 pups. He just happened to be the runt compared to his two sisters but he is healthy. However I still treat him with so much care. He doesn't go outside to use the bathroom because he is trained on the pee pee pads. I had to make him a harness so I could take him on walks because the two I bought are too big. I socialize him with my two sisters yorkies because I worry about other dogs. I stay at home so he goes almost everywhere with me. Needless to say he is soooo spoiled. |
I do believe there are better foods that you could feed your little one, less byproducts and less corn. solid gold, merrick, blue buffalo, natural balance, fromm, acana are just a few of the better foods, if you decide to change do it over a week to ten days so it don't upset there stomach |
