Yorkie or Silky?
 

I got my puppy from a yorkie breeder and I'm trying to figure out if she is indeed a yorkie or if she is a silky terrier. We went to the dog park today and I was talking to some fellow yorkie owners and one said that her breeder told her it was a yorkie but was in fact a silky. It doesn't really matter to me, but I was just curious and was trying to see if anyone had any opinions as to whether she is a yorkie or silky. She is almost 5 months old and weighs about 8 pounds

There are so many similarities between yorkies and silkies that it is often hard to tell, especially when you are dealing with pet quality dogs. There are many purebred yorkies that are on the larger side. Could you post a picture of her?

I am not sure if the pups weight has anything to do with whether or not she is a Yorkie. If you go online to check out what Silkies or Yorkies look like they can tell you better but I do believe one difference is in the face. There is a different look to the face I seem to remember and I think maybe a Silkie is longer in the body. But as I said if you google it and see pictures of Silkies and Yorkies then you can see if your dog looks more like one than the other. Does this help you any? I know you are just curious but it wouldn't hurt to see for sure. I know you must love her whatever.

Did they mention why they think your pup's a silky? Like.. his muzzle is too long? Size? Fur texture?

Can you post a picture? That might give us a better idea. Weight isn't really an indicator of breed.

Yorkies are way way more common than silkys in the US so I bet yours is a yorkie and I bet that other person that told you there yorkie was a silky is also a yorkie. Somewhere along the way someone has told them there yorkie is a silky and they have believed it. It is a common thing to be said about the bigger yorkies

Our daughter has a silky and as puppys it is remarkable how much he looked like a yorkie. He is now 6 years old and it is easy for us to tell the difference. His head shape is different, as is his muzzle, and he is longer in body.

After reading the link I posted I'm confused to rather or not I have a yorkie or silky..what you guys think. Her papers say she is bit now I'm not sure.

This is an interesting topic to me as you can see...lol

Just from the picture.. she looks more like a yorkie rather than a silky. Alot of ppl think Magnus is a silky b/c of his size and certain characteristics. But I've met few people who said their yorkie looks EXACTLY like Magnus and they have all the right documents that says so...

I've had people tell me that Maggie is a silky. We were at a dog event when a guy strolled by and told me what a cute silky I had. When I told him she was a Yorkie, he said his mom raised silkies and he knew one when he saw one. Oh well, she's mine, I love her, I don't care.

Two of my dogs are yorkies and one of them is a silky. Our silky is actually smaller than both of our yorkies, so size alone does not determine yorkie vs. silky. Our silky is definitely longer than tall. She has a longer snout which is also shaped somewhat different from our yorkies. Her ears are also higher on her head than our yorkies. Her hair is different. Even though she looks very similar to a yorkie, there are definite differences. Heck, most people think she's a yorkie too. If you research yorkies, silkys, and austrailian terriers, you will begin to see some of the australian terrier traits in the silky.

If your dog is longer than tall, it could very well be a silky. If the dog is about as tall as it is long, then very likely that it is a yorkie. Look at the other traits of both breeds and see if you can tell which it most closely resembles. I will tell you that they are both wonderful dogs though!

Our other dog is a 6 lb. maltese, and she thinks she rules the roost! She definitely has an alpha personality, and her and our older yorkie constantly battle for that alpha spot. Ginger is getting a little older now (almost 11) and tends to let Lilly (the maltese) get away with her antics more than she used to. Crazy little dogs. They all have different personalities. :)

It would be really hard for most people to tell the difference between a Yorkie pup and a Silky pup unless they were someone with experience with both breeds. Trying to guess by looking at a picture is going to bring lots of different ideas.

Is there a reason that you would not trust your breeder to tell you the truth about your pup? I realize someone you met at the dog park thinks they go a bad deal but that doesn't mean everyone is going to have the same problem. Did the breeder have other breeds of dogs they were selling?

Right now you have a lovely dog that must love you very much and I you must love her, too. You could do a DNA test to find out for sure but at this point it really doesn't matter much except as a curiosity.

If you ever decide to buy another purebred dog make sure you check out the breed and the breeder really well, check out several of them first, and then decide for yourself which of the many pups out there is the best one for you. There are a lot of different "types" of Yorkie out there right now so trying to compare them and determine what kind of genes they really have is pretty difficult.

I heard on silky 101 that silky is a cross between a Australian terrier and the Yorkshire terrier..

Honestly, she looks like she could be silky. Either way, they are great pets! I have both and wouldn't trade them for the world!

My last girl was a big girl, at 8 weeks old she was bigger then my 6 y/o yorkie, she had huge ears, just a beautiful puppy. As an adult he weighed 17 lbs. Lots of ppl thought she was a silky because of her size, my vet even said she looked like a silky, her AKC paper read yorkie, color Blue. She had a long snout, but I chalked that off to her size, big dog, longer snout. She had pure black hair on her body, face and legs was a light auburn, she never turned silver. I also had another yorkie, smaller, weighed 10 lbs,color was the same but her face and legs was a deep auburn she also never turned silver. My last girl had to be put down at age 17 y/o, in those 17 years I never saw a yorkie as big as her, since joining YT I see many members have large yorkies. My last girl (Matese) had all yorkie characteristics, so the size of your yorkie does not determine the breed. Your baby looks like a yorkie to me, but a picture is just that,a picture which is hard to tell by, besides, I am not an expert on telling apart a yorkie from a silky. I went by what her AKC papers stated. She was a smart, intelligent lil girl that I miss soooo much.
