How Long to Learn New Tricks How long does it generally take your dog to learn a new command/trick? |
I think it depends on the dog, Laddy picks up tricks very quickly ( usually in one or two practice sessions) Kyra is a stubborn girl, she does tricks but only when she is in the mood or treats are present. |
It generally takes Teddy about 2 weeks of 20 minute daily sessions to do a trick successfully; without assistance. |
It depends on the trick. When Doodlebug was just a tiny puppy he learned roll over and it was the cutest thing ever. It also depends if your little one is food driven. They seem to learn quicker. |
MJ learned how to "sit" in 20min. And "lay" in 40min. I was a proud momma! |
It depends but she normally has the basics in 5 to 10 minutes but I am using very gross smelly liver treats and she is a smarty pants lol. |

I agree that it depends on the trick. Max and Teddy immediately knew things like sit and kisskiss. Teddy took an entire year to shake hands because he didn't see the point of doing it. He now obliges for a treat. |
Depends on the trick - and the trainer Shelby got "down" in about a week - and is now brilliant at it (she prefers it over "sit") Left paw, right paw, high ten - took about 2 weeks, but she can do it in three languages. Ringing a bell has taken about 9 months - but that partially reflects on the trainer ;) - she still hasn't connected it with going out... (it *will* happen, I *know* it will) Spin left, spin right - took just a day or two - Balancing our checkbook - she got in a day (might have something to do with her first human mom) :D So who knows.... Down took Gina the longest, but she usually picks up on a new trick right away, she is usually used to show off how to do a trick in her classes. Crawl also took a week to get down but she uses it to get things she otherwise couldn't reach. If you don't have one I strongly suggest a target stick, Amazon has one with a built in clicker, and it extends, for $19.99, I have 2 one on the coffee table and on that stays on her treat pouch.
