Ragdoll cats and Yorkies Does anyone have experience with Yorkies and cat cohabitating? I have a 4 yr old Ragdoll and she's not your typical Ragdoll - somewhat needy, of course on her terms! :p We lost her 1/2 sister just about 5 months ago and she had a hard time adjusting, she's just now getting settled. I've talked to the vet, but we talked about getting another cat - not sure how that would go! :confused: So I would like a dog again, but want a small dog and I'm very interested in the Yorkie! I know there's different weights - the ones I like are anywhere from 5-8 lbs. My cat weighs 9 lbs! I had my cat watch Youtube where there was a Yorkie barking and she was very interested and watched the dog barking and moving around! But she was also ready to get away from it too! :D I don't want to get the dog and then something happen or the dog stresses out or the cat stresses out...then I stress out!! I'd be interested to know how other folks have dealt with this! Thank you |
I have a cat. She is a year and a half. My cat was a rescue and is always cautious of new things. At first my cat stocked her. She was not impressed with her at all. It has been a month a month now and they no longer bother each other. |
I have 4 cats before I brought Galen home. They were 12 year old brothers Rosencrantz and Gulidenstern, a 1.5 years male Saber (about 16 lbs) and 1 year old female Willow . There was a little adjusting. I have a few cat trees for them. He has been bopped in the head by a paw a few times, no claws. Just to let him know who is boss by Rosencrantz. They do like to sit on the couch and watch him do zoomies around the coffee table. . . I think it turned into a pastime for them. lol . . And Galen does love to hump Willow. . . He claims she is his cat ! And she lets him ;) . . Mind he is neutered lol I do have to say the transition went so much better then expected . . I thought the cats would have more of a problem with him. . . But he was a puppy when I brought him home. They can jump on the couch or tree and get away from him. I do have an ex pen that I use to keep him safe when I go out. He does get into stuff. . . I think if you want to dog get one. If you have any other questions ask or even PM me :) . . .good luck |
We have 3 cats, one of which is a Rag Doll, with Megan my last girl, it was live and let live between all 4 animals. With Gina, it's utter madness and mayhem, Spooky our tuxedo cat and Gina, get along even if Gina barks at her to get her to play, Spooky sometimes mews or chirps if Gina stops barking. Skimble Shanks, our Rag Doll doesn't like Gina, and Holy our 12 yr old 30 pound cat suffers Gina's presence. Gina has an ex pen where she gets put when she won't stop barking or won't leave the cats alone as they try to drink at the water station. I hope one day soon that this will all stop and become live and let live, but I'm not holding my breath. Good luck. Cheers Quad & Gina:aimeeyork |
The one thing that Galen picked up is feeding time. . . . I have a kitty choir at feeding time. . . . Meow meow meow until they get their food. Galen feels that he needs to join in so he whines lol I have got pretty quick getting the food out ;) . . .but usually I tell him shush and he stops . . . |

My Min Pin and one of my cats take turns cleaning each others ears. It's so funny to watch them try to decide who will get cleaned first. They both lay down beside each other and have a conversation that Only they understand. I have some weird animals....Hannah gets along with all the cats! |
Some ragdolls love dogs and some don’t but will tolerate them. It’s best if they’re exposed to cats or kittens early. My Ragdoll kittens loved my 8 pound yorkie, but the mother would scratch my yorkie periodically. It didn’t help that she was never around dogs though. I had to send my Ragdoll back to the original breeder/old breeder co-partner. I’m in the process of purchasing a ragdoll kitten who has been exposed to dogs. It might be better for you, because there is a possibility that your female is spayed. Ragdoll females that haven’t been spayed and exposed to dogs can be more aggressive due to their hormones. Please, be mindful though that yorkies fall more in the hunters department just like cats, so it can go well and it might not. The smaller the yorkie the better though, because the Ragdoll cat won’t see the yorkie as a serious threat but you should monitor your yorkie because it can leave such a small yorkie as an easy target and easy prey. |

Not anymore. The mother is back with her original breeder, and all of my ragdoll kittens have sold except for one male. He is a kitten and he grew up around my yorkie, so they get along great. After he is sold I will purchase another female ragdoll kitten from another breeder, and it will go smoothly. |
I have had cats and dogs together multiple times. Here's what I notice, the closer in age they are, the more likely they are to get along. For example, if you have a playful kitten and a playful puppy.......instant friendship. If you have a puppy and a older cat, the cat will other hate him or love him or tolerate him. If you have a kitten and a older dog, the dog will love the kitten. If you have an older cat and a older dog both well past the terrible twos, they sort of just tolerate each other assuming of course they didn't grow up together. This isn't scientific, but it has been my observation. I have a cat and a yorkie now, they are like human siblings. One minute they are playing together and they next minute they are arguing...... |
