Adding a second I know there has been some recent threads about getting a second yorkie, and I am in the same boat with some more questions. Right now I have Lexi, a maltese/yorkie mix who is almost 7 months old. I would love to get her a playmate. After her obedience class she was so excited to meet new dogs and run around with them, but she was just too small to really play with them and ended up just standing next to me. That's when I thought she needed a friend closer to her size. She weighed in at 4.4 lbs at the vet today and may make it to her estimated 5 lbs. If I get another, I would like one closer to 6-7 lbs although I know there is no way to know for sure. Few questions/concerns. I have this (irrational?) fear of getting a boy. I always hear about marking and Lexi was so easy to potty train. Are boys harder to potty train? I also hear horrible things about having two girls (fighting, etc?) Is this something that I should be worries about? Those who have 2, how long did it take for your first pup to get adjusted to the new one, and how long until you where able to leave them home alone together without separating them? |
I can only answer your question about females fighting or getting along. I had an unspayed female when she was 3 y/o I came home with an un-planned 8 week old female puppy. My 3 y/o wasn't sure what momma came home with. It was a bouncy, furry thing that made silly yapping noise and had lots of Sharpe teeth. So the older one took to the hills, the sofa, until she could figure out what this thing was. When the puppy was able to jump on and off the sofa (about 6 to 8 weeks later 3 1/2 to 4 months old they were not tiny babies) my older one had no choice but to accept the new comer. I also did not have the 2nd one spayed. So now I have 2 unspayed females. These girls never fought, not even when one of them came into season, not even as much as a growl. When the 2nd one was 3 y/o and my older one was 6 y/o again I came home with an un-planned for 8 week old puppy, another female. Again, older ones confused with what did momma bring home today, and off to the safety of the sofa. Again when the baby was able to jump on and off the sofa the 2 older ones had to accept her, the 3rd one I had spayed. Now I had 3 females, 2 not spayed, one spayed. Never did they fight, there was never any jealousy between them. I paper trained my puppies first, then house broke them, all 3 were trained the same way. the first 2 were left alone unsupervised when that puppy was 100 % paper trained, puppy was 5 months old, same with the 3rd puppy, she was also 5 months old and 100 % paper trained when she was left with the 2 older ones unsupervised. They all got along beautifully. |
Hi, we have two boys, neither was difficult to potty train. I work from home, so that probably helped in terms of monitoring and taking them out frequently. The one we got as a puppy caught on very quickly. We got a rescue yorkie about a year after our first and had to potty train him although he was a year old. Again, few problems. The two pups are about 6 months apart in age and meshed nicely from the start. I don't remember even having to separate them when alone. It's been awesome to have two, they play like crazy and keep one another company. We're having a blast with them! |
My male was a breeze... My female loves to mark, mostly my males food bowl. So I really think you just never know what you will get no mater what sex the 2nd one is. |
How do you know for sure how your first yorkie will react to a second? Trixie is 4 1/2 years old and plays with my friends morkie and my friends goldendoodle, but tends to me the "alpha" with them both. I have wanted to add a second, but my husband doesn't think Trixie will like it :idontknow |
I just got my Trixie a new little sister Saturday. She has been scared to death of it but they actually played a little tonight. I was so proud of her. My Trixie is almost 2 but she cannot jump on the couch or bed...she is either too little or something scared since we have hardwood floors. |

Those with more than one... do your pups sleep together at night or prefer their own space? Lexi sleeps in her crate at night and would do the same with the new pup. |
Both of mine sleep with me on a king-size bed. Every night I'm hanging on to the edge of the bed for dear life :D |
It's very individual to each dog's personality. At first our two jack russells (both girls) were more curious than wanting to have much to do with my yorkie pup. But I was expecting and hoping the older one will show her maternal instinct (fixed, never had a litter) as she always loved kittens and baby/kid humans. She showed more interest and in the past two days have actually played with her and shown more concern for her. But the other younger one, who has been babied some and is clingy, doesn't show much interest in her at all. occasionally curious but not very close, but I'm hoping she'll warm up to her eventually. |
Coco was NOT happy with me at all when I brought Rico home almost a year ago, but she got over it. They get along well now. He's really laid back and she's more serious. |
Trixie sleeps with us, the puppy has been sleeping in the stroller right next to my bed. I have been patting her to sleep and making Trixie feel safe by her not being exactly in the bed yet. |

Thanks everyone. After thinking about it more, I would really like to adopt this time around, possibly an adult (already housetrained) and not necessarily a yorkie which are hard to come by around here anyway. What size dog do you think would still be small enough to play with my 5 pounder? I was thinking not more than 10 pounds. May take me a while to find the perfect fit, but I'm going to start looking. |
