The more I read the ingredients, the more I think I want to change his food
 
I was originally thinking I would keep Sheldon on the food he is on with his breeder, but the more I read the ingredients, the more I want to change it. I know to switch very slowly, but I want to know what brands those who use dry kibble recommend. For the time being, he will be on Royal Canin X-small puppy, but there are just way too many corn ingredients for my preference. I generally prefer grain free.

What do you all think? Thanks in advance.

My Lily is on Royal Canin puppy as well. So I am no help to you. Lol. I'm sure someone can give you some grain free options to look at.

I am no expert, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to change your pups food. My suggestion would be to leave your pup on Royal Canine until you change to an adult food around a year old. There are quite a few on YT that feed Royal Canine and are happy with the food. Everyone has their own opinion on the best food and the topic comes up all the time. If your pup is doing well and seems to like the food, I wouldn't mess with what is working right now. This is just my opinion and I'm sure others will be expressing their opinion too.


I hope you enjoy your new puppy and post pictures of the little cutie when you can.

I have fed RC to all my dogs since the '70's. Never had an issue with it.....healthy dogs, great coats, etc....of course my dogs do not have diet issues, ie. allergies requiring grain free. I clearly understand the grains are also scientifically proven via clinical trials, to be nutritionally necessary in a dogs diet. Unless there is an issue with your dog and grains, you really have no reason to switch foods.....you are feeding a dog food that undergoes years of clinical trials, is formulated scientifically to provide all necessary nurtients to our pets, providing evidenced based success in clinical outcomes....and the quality control is second to none.

I have fed Royal Canin since I got Cookie at 14.5 weeks, and it is what my breeder fed from 8 weeks to 14.5 weeks. I trust my breeder's knowledge on yorkies way more than anyone else's I know, and she told me Royal Canin is the way to go. Cookie loves the stuff, is in spectacular health, and has tons of energy.

I know Blue Buffalo constantly runs commercials about grain being bad and their marketing campaign has been very successful, because I hear it all the time from friends who have dogs they deeply care about and wonder why I feed RC instead of Blue Buffalo. But I always take it as a red flag when some company has to advertise a lot, when someone has to try to talk me into buying their product. I'll stick with Royal Canin until my breeder tells me there is something better.

I've just gotten so used to it because I've treated a lot of fosters for demodex, and always feed grain free with those cases. I've heard most people do like the Royal Canin, so we will probably stick with it.

Royal Canin uses a lot of science when making there foods. I think sometimes we like to say well such and such is bad for us so our dogs shouldn't have it. Or sometimes there will be people who are not animal nutritionists or even vets say something is bad for a dog when they don't have the training or knowledge to do that. I used to be on the omg no grains and corn thing but really dogs need stuff that we as humans don't. You would be surprised how many of the holistic brands don't have a vet on staff. I had switched to Royal Canin awhile ago and my girl with extremely sensitive skin has had no problems on it and loves it.

I worried a lot about which kibble to feed Max and got caught up in all of the premium, no grain, etc etc recommendations.

I have come to believe that the best food is the one your dog does best with. Don't worry about how many stars anyone gives the food.

My boys eat a food with grains and do not have any problems.

I always go by ingredients, but I am super picky about what I call food. :D
