sorry, more questions My dog hates water. Hated the bath we tried to give him. While on this topic, are we suppose to use cold water or warm water? I just kind of warm water The dog is trained to pee/poo outside and it was raining today.. so he didnt want to go outside. Eventually did it under the tree later when he really really had to go. Should i just carry him into the rain? How do i train him to pee/poo in the pee pad in the house? Another question i have is, we live in Canada where it gets really cold in the winter. Is it necessary to put clothes on them. Also, people would salt their walkways and how would i prevent him from licking up the salt which cannot be good for them. And do you guys wash their legs after every walk. ? Another question is, when I play with him, he likes to roll over and let me pat his belly. but almost always after a while of patting and playing with him, he will start to playfully bite, and then eventually it gets harder and harder? If I stop patting him, he will just bite my leg, feet, and jump around growling.. what is going on. and he doesnt listen to commands |

They are like us in that a cold bath would be very painful/uncomfortable. Test the water temp on the inside of your wrist. I pee pad trained our dogs and really regret it a lot. If your kiddo is doing well w/ outside training...I wouldn't mess with it, personally. He will get use to the rain, give him time. Yorkies can get cold be they don't have double coats and their coats instead can be rather thin. If you feel your kiddo is getting cold in the cooler months, you could definitely try clothes. Some people buy those heated pet beds too. In the winter here, I sometimes leave a heating pad on the floor and mine just LOVE it. Similar to how human babies go through a very orally-focused stage. When the biting gets too hard, either tell him no and then ignore him or instead grab a toy and put it btwn you so that he bites that instead. Do you have chew toys for him, bc that helps. |
You have recieved great answers already. So I'll only add a bit. When a dog bites too hard, do what wylie's mom says, but also I'd cry out- a short high pitch sound. Let your dog know it hurt. As for pee pads, these yorkies are the first dogs we ever pee pad trained, we've never done it before. Our dogs were always house trained in weeks. If your dogs already trained to go out, I'd stick to it. We only pee pad trained as I'm now disabled, and so frickin' slow. lol We didn't want our dogs to have cross their legs. |
Water fear etc I can see you may have problems with the weather, especially in the cold winters. Some more comments to add to those already suggested above. My dog does not like the rain also, but he hates the noise of the wind in the trees that come with it too. I have a raincoat for him and providing I don't cover his eyes with the hood, he seems to put up with rain better. Yes I do wash his feet and legs after walks, even in the summer as he has seasonal allergies. You certainly don't want him licking salt. My boy is only potty trained outside, but if he has a rare emergency he goes in one spot he chose ( by the trash can, LOL!) in the tiled kitchen. I have never used pee pads. If it is raining hard I put his raincoat on and carry him over to his grassy peeing place, and carry him back. We all still get wet though. Aaarghh! |
You've gotten a lot of really good advises but I'd like to add one thing about the bath. When you bathe your pup, are you putting something on the surface of the sink/tub for him? Like a small towel or bath mat. It gives them traction so they won't feel as unstable. I also make it a habit of wiping them down (body, legs, paws) after we come back from outside with baby wipes. For the winter, I use "musher's secret" which is type of wax for pad protection against those salts. My two HATES wearing any type of booties. |
Bath water should be warm. Mine hated bathes and so did my moms until I started singing silly made up songs to them the whole time. You also need to talk to your vet about an ear cleaner with a drying agent in it for after every bath and let your vet show you how to use it. Mine does not like to go out when it's raining but she does not have accidents in the house so normally unless I am getting really worried about it I let her decided when she is going to go. Yorkies do not have under coats like most dogs so they can get colder easier so generally if your cold so are they. Road salt is toxic to them my mom has a friend who did not know this and the dog licked the salt off there feet and starting having seizures and passed away. I would avoid it if possible and if not I would get dog boots or shoes. I think it might can burn there paws to but not sure on that one. It does sound like his is playing with you and just gets carried away when he does that I would say no and stop playing. |
