Unusual small seizure-like behaviors Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced their yorkie having very subtle tremors and occasional gasps or deep breaths. My Roxie has had this once before and we immediately took her to the vet. They did blood work, and other tests and found she was fine. This is the second time in over a month and although she is responsive, moving around and eating, (she's presently resting) I'm wondering if anyone else can give me some advice. We have another vet appointment today.:( I have already given her a little water with sugar and had her lick Dr. Cal's Forti Care Gel from the breeder to prevent low blood sugar. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.:animal36 |
How old is Roxie? What tests were done? What did your vet think was the issue previously? Do you have a video of her doing this? |
My first thought is that you've got to get a video of this, if at all possible...that would be the most helpful for the vet. It's hard to guess at what this could be. Does she seem "present" when this happens or out of it? How old is she? |
Thank you for your quick responses. Roxie is 10 months old. Yes, I did video it. That was my first thought. Last time she was taken to the vet, I was out of town. My son and brother-in-law took her. They said they did blood work, and other tests (not sure what). Roxie has been outside for a walk and played. I gave her more water (with a little sugar in it), she's not eating, but she did eat this morning. She is lying down now, very tired. Her vet appointment is in an hour and I'll keep everyone posted. Any specific questions, I should ask? Thank you! |
I also forgot to mention that she was "present" when they were happening. They were very subtle. Had I not been holding her, I wouldn't have noticed so quickly. She still has those throat gasps occasionally. I'm going to ask about her trachea as that is a common problem in yorkies. Again, I really appreciate all of your feedback. Thank you, |
Is it after she eats? My vet warned me about small yorkies not processing food because of their kidneys (I think she said kidney's) and having seizures because of it. |
I would also make sure her heart has been checked (echos are best for that). I have seen this in dogs with heart problems as well, and they don't always have a murmur when they have a heart problem. |
Hi, To everyone who posted about my Roxie's seizure like behaviors. I did take Roxie to the Vet. I go to Banfield in Petsmart. I brought my video and showed the doctor. After a close exam, she told me she was going to test for Liver Shunt as it's common in small breeds, especially yorkies. She did blood tests and tested Roxie's electrolytes. All tests (CBC, Internal Organ Function, & differential) came back normal. Roxie did rest a bit more and was back to herself later that day. No further episodes since. I have been reading more about this online and have a list of things to look for and tests to ask for if it happens again. The only thing I can think of is that she may have gotten into some chemicals or plants outside. We don't spray our lawn, but neighbors do. Thank you for all your help. I appreciate the connection. Hi, To all who tried to help with my Roxie. I took her to the doctor and showed her my video. She did an exam and then ordered tests for Liver Shunt. She ordered blood tests ( CBC, Internal Organ Function, & Differential) and an electrolyte test. All tests came back normal. Roxie rested a bit and was back to her normal self shortly thereafter. ???? The only thing I can think of is that she got into something outside like chemicals or plants. I don't spray, but my neighbors do (although not recently). So, we still don't know what caused her unusual behavior. However, I am more prepared if there is a next time with things to look for and what tests to ask for. Thank you all! Roxie's mom, Rosary |
