Advice Hi everyone, I am going to look at two yorkies this weekend from the same breeder. One is a 9 week old female and the other is a 4 month old. She said the 4 month old at the begining was not eating so she kept her to make sure she was ok. I asked if she had a liver shunt and she said no. She said she is not happy and eating and running around so she is ready to sell her. Would you be weary about getting her. She said she will probably only be 4 pounds as an adult. I heard sometimes the little ones have alot of health problems. Anyone on hear have a little one with health problems. Thanks for the advice. This is such a big decision to make. Mindy |
This is the direction I would take on it. Does she offer a health certificate? are you meeting the mom and dad? if the answers are no that's a red flag to me...still doesn;t mean there is anything wrong with the babies. Also it is best to have the baby with the mom until 12 weeks in-case you weren't aware of that. I would be sure to line up a vet appt within 48 hours of getting the new pup to ensure the health is what the breeder states. |
Yes she does have a health certificate. I am sure she has health records from the 4 month old that I would ask to see. Thanks for the advice. |
The recommended time for Yorkie pups to stay with their mother is 12 weeks, so the 9 week pup is a bit young. It is normal for a breeder to keep a smaller one, sometimes the runt, longer, until they gain a bit of weight; so it's good to know that has been done. It would be hard to determine if the 4 month old pup has a liver shunt, as it is too young to have had testing to determine. Is there a health guarantee cover genetic diseases up to 1 year, or just a health certificate first 48 hrs.? |
The 9 one week is not ready to go home yet. I was just going to go look at them this weekend. I didnt realize the 4 month old was to young to check for liver shunt so that worries me. I am not sure about the 1 year warranty. I will ask her that when I see her. Thanks for the information. |
Most good breeders offer the one year guarantee. Also, some require you to take your pup to your vet within a certain time frame. Also you might check references on the breeder to see if past customers were pleased or not. It sounds as if the 4 month old might have been small so she kept her. Did you ask why she hadn't sold her already? I have three girls, all from different people. Rosie has IBS. Mikki has LP and so far Lily is great. Rosie is 6 lb, Mikki is 4 lb, and Lily is projected to be 4-5 lb. You also might look into getting insurance for health problems that might arise. As far as being weary of getting her, I tend to follow my heart. Then deal with the problems if they arise. I took both Rosie and Mikki without knowing anything, no health guarantee, etc. Lily was purchased from a breeder who I researched heavily. I love my girls and wouldn't trade them for anything. So my advice is follow your heart. :). |

Actually 16wks is not too young to get the first BATS test done. And you could request this of the breeder to do if you are interested in the 4mth old. And btw the parents should have been BATS tested prior to breeding along with a few other pre0breeding screening tests. You do need to research this breeder, to have ideally prior to seeing the pups her health guarantee and what it covers if anything. |
I talked to another person that used her and her dog is doing well and she is going to get another one of her soon. I have not even seen the pictures yet. She is surpose to send them to me tonight. Then I will make the decision if I want to meet them. Thanks for all the advice |
