Johnny won't eat anymore My yorkie Johnny, who's turning one on Friday, stopped eating his regular food two weeks ago, and is also reluctant to eat treats. He used to crave treats for training. Now, he sleeps in, and doesn't want to eat in the morning, even if I make him home cooked food. He will eat in the evening, but only home cooked, and is extremely active then. We had him checked for Giardia when the behavior first started and it was negative. I think it's the extreme heat, but wonder if I should have him checked out. I can't send him to daycare, which he goes to twice a week, if he won't eat breakfast, because he plays all day when he's there. He's currently 8 pounds, and hasn't lost any weight. Any advice? I don't want to have to make him food forever, because when we go on vacation, his sitter can't make it. My previous yorkie girl acted strangely around all weather changes, mostly not wanting to eat and vomiting. |
Hmm, I thinking to agree it's being out in the sun/heat alot suddenly. Granted I'm sort of basing this on my personal reactions, but not too long ago I spent more time in the sun than I had in years and the very next day I literally lost alot of my appetite. I couldn't even finish half my lunch. When i commented about it to some friends or clients they all mention something about being in the sun alot can make you lose your appetite, or as my best friend calls being "sun-zapped". Might not hurt to ask the vet about heat/sun exposure. You can try to premake a decent amount of the food ahead of time and have them kept in the fridge or freezer to be served later in the case of being away for a bit, for your sitter. |
I have never had dogs not eat due to heat. I think if this continues, a visit to the vet is warranted. |
Have you tried different food and treats? For food, (if it's kibbles) soak them in chicken broth for a bit before giving it to him. Then slowly cut back on the broth. My two usually gobble that up. |
When Teddy was that age, he wouldn't eat when he knew we would be going out walking in the warm weather. He would wait until we got home and he had time to cool down. Do you have central air conditioning? I would be concerned by dramatic changes in sleeping patterns, activity level, and eating if the a/c is running. I would check in with the vet. |
We have central air. Yesterday I hand fed him his EVO canned food. In the evening he ate Stella and Chewys from a treat ball (and popcorn which is his favorite treat) After 7 in the evening he perks right up and goes back to his crazy self, which last night included getting a hold of the tissue box and taking them all out on the bed! |
I just wanted to say thanks to 107Barney for your wonderful washable wee wee pads. We used them for Johnny when he was house training. Now we use them for when he eats his messy marrow bones. |
